Stock, I felt like the Sterling SUB USA basses sounded more like a 3 band Stingray, as it was the same "guts". They are fantastic basses, I've had a few in my day.
I'm not sure how the Basslines sounds, but I hear good things!

This is one honky bass, but the controls are very dynamic so it's easily tamed. Came with a Musicman case. My favorite part: it plays without the battery. The output is lower, but it plays. That way at home I can leave it on the stand plugged in and when I'm playing with the band, I can put the battery back. Damn fine bass.

I've seen the Musicman nut before but I've always wondered, why is it like this? Rather than a plain Fender-ey type nut.

Gents, I like this bass and I'll gladly keep it, but I'd prefer a Stingray version. I'd prefer a wider neck and I don't like this color. I made a trade thread in the classifieds but I'll ask here as well:

I'll trade for the Ray version. Any color but red or purple. 4 or 5 string. Active or passive.

Iirc correctly the newer 'compensated nut' was created to make the nut to body tuning/intonation more accurate across all frets and strings

The active Sterling played without the battery, so that means the pickup was passive, right?

On the Sub Stingrays, is it the same? Or is the stock pickup active?

Cool. I like being able to take the battery out so I an keep the bass plugged in at home.

NBD - It doesn't have the sticker on the headstock so I don't know the year, but it has the compensated nut so it's newer, right? Either way it's pretty awesome. The Sterling I had with the Basslines pickup had audible volume without the battery, but not this one. I can barely hear it. But it sounds great regardless. I'll just have to unplug it every time I play which is extremely annoying, but I'll live with it. Damn fine bass.

Honestly, I'd rather have one of these over a real deal stingray. I like this finish better and I like the slab body and they sound just as good. My OCD is a little bothered by the fact that it says SUB bass on the headstock, which stands for sport utility bass bass, but again, I can live with it.

I'm reading through previous discussions and I can't find a definitive answer on whether it's boost only, or boost and cut but with no detent, or the bass is boost only and the treble is boost/cut/no detent (on the active Stingray)

USA Stingray-type SUBS are the same as the Pre-EB 2 band preamps: Bass is boost only, treble is boost/cut (halfway up is flat but there is no center detent).
Here is my second SUB 5, at under 9.5 lb. this one weighs 2 lb. less than the first:

It looks like the pickguard is cut at a right angle around the bridge. An odd choice.

Has anyone ever put a graphite neck on a SUB? I really like the idea of a neck that's impervious to seasonal changes. Any suggestions?

I've seen it done, I'm sure it was great but also at substantial expense. I have never had seasonal issues with any of my 6 subs, and even if I they needed an adjustment the wheel adjuster makes it so easy

I've never had seasonal issues with any of my basses ever but I'm obsessive compulsive enough about this non-problem that the idea of a graphite neck has always appealed to me.

And, they look really cool.
