S.U.B. Club

Good to know. Thanks. This makes me wonder even more if it's a prototype. No serial number.

Serial numbers were on a sticker on the back of the headstock. It's possible it was removed/damaged and lost.

This is one of mine (that I sold :( )

My new S.U.B. came in today. Oiled up the fingerboard (it was super dry), threw on a set of Fat Beams, swapped in a $11 pearloid pickguard from Amazon (shockingly good quality for the price and perfect fit), and now it's rockin'. I have a Stingray Special 4HH that I love and will never part with, but sometimes you just need that 2-band Stingray sound. And this 2003 example is just under 9 lbs, which hits just right for me.

Forgive the trashy photo (pun intended), I wanted good light to catch the pickguard just right.

Does anybody know what material was used for the original black pickguard? I've seen some matte black materials in different thicknesses, but I'm clueless to what is the originals are made off.

I want to replace the silver guard, but keep things as original as possible. :)

Aren‘t the original pick guards all that horrible metal-looking cross-hatch pattern?

Not much more to know, really. Most were shipped with diamond plate pick guard. Matte black was optional. Mine, a 2006 Cinnamon purchased used about 10 months ago, had the diamond plate. I replaced it with matte black.

Fair enough. I was just wondering if you knew more about when it was an option etc. I've never seen one stock with black plate (I've had 3 -a white and a cinnamon 4 string, and a black 5 string-, and the first thing I did was remove that metal plate and put a matt black too ) so I was wondering why not, as there doesn't seem to be a huge love for those judging by how many get replaced. Just curious.

I’d bet big there was never an option, esp. given the whole point of these was to keep them simple, distinct from the regular line, and costs down so there were the (3?) basic colors and no other variations (just active/passive option).

They only made the SUB Bass 2003-2006.
So the single ply black guards come from that time. ;)

Has anybody here added an active/passive switch to their SUB Bass?
The SUB Bass was the only Stingray offered passive, it might be nice to have the passive option on the active ones.

With respect, will wait for some indication someone bought one *new* with a non-metallic pick guard, or a pic / advert of a listing for a new one with black pick guard at the time. Unless that happens, it didn’t happen.

I called and asked the folks at Ernie Ball if my single ply black pickguard was stock and they said yes.

*If!*
I'm not convinced about that yet.

I haven't done that to the SUBs I had, but I had that done to my 2002 Stingray. It would have been better to have added a passive tone control too, but it's still nice.

I bought it used, but I called MusicMan to ask about the pre-amp controls and to get a birth date for my bass.
During that conversation I asked about the pickguard and the guy said that some of them had that pickguard.
It is possible he was uninformed and bullsh!tting but it could also be the truth.
Maybe the weird diamond plate material was out of stock for a bit and they went with simple cheap single ply black for one run.
We also talked about the introduction of the compensated nut that they started putting on them in year three I think, and he they did not have one he could sell me.
