Sandwiches!

Carnegie was okay. Not as good as Katz.

I think Gaffigan goes there in literally every single episode of his show. Definitely on my to do list if I ever go to New York.

I think it could be good if seasoned correctly. I don't get to Iowa much though. I never do, in fact.

I have been known to make these at home, did one recently. I jack it up with seasonings, cheese and mushrooms. Could be anything from chili powder, to curry, or ???. The most boring food just needs some seasoning and help. It is indeed messy, but hey. Not such a bad trade off.
Any of you guys who live in the rust belt or NE region don't know the most mediocre sammich you can get in your parts beats the best you can get in many other places in the States.

My daughter and I went to Cheesecake Factory the other day because they signed a peace treaty with a comedy game show. That made no sense? The show '@midnight' has made Cheesecake Factory jokes for a while. But the other day, they said if the Cheesecake Factory agreed to their terms and fed their entire studio audience cheesecake, they'd sign a peace treaty and not make mean jokes about them anymore.

So anyway, since Cheesecake Factory DOES negotiate with terrorists and fed the audience, we went there to eat.

One of their appetizers is a bacon grilled cheese sandwich. They cut it in four strips so you can share it without fighting.

Now here's the catch: I don't know what kind of bread that was, or what kind of bacon, or even what kind of cheese. But it was really good.

I just re-read this thread because I was bored. Now I really want a sandwich.

I like crusty buns where the inside is soft but the crust is strong. That way I can cut them in half and have a bread tasting collapsible inside, with a sturdy fluid-proof outside.

Then it needs some kind of flavorful dressing type stuff. Lately I've been digging olive salad, like you find in a decently traditional muffaleta. Most of the local places that serve sandwiches get a little weird here, but in a predictable way. And I predict that it will include chipotle. I'm bored with the taste of chipotles. In stead right now, I think I prefer a horseradish mayonnaise, or maybe a traditional coarse brown mustard.

Meats are pretty subjective. Lately I'm loving the fruit of the pig. So mixing porks, kind of like in a Cuban is awesome. So this hypothetical sandwich will get pulled pork, then ham, then bacon.

Cheeses are also subjective. But I'm a total cheesoholic and proud of it. So I like to mix a couple of cheeses with different characteristics. So maybe something sharp that holds together mixed with something that melts to a creamy consistency like feta and Monterey jack, or more likely extra sharp cheddar and muenster, or cotija and mozzarella...whatever you want. But the complexity of texture is important.

Vegetation is more standardized. You can go with the completely traditional lettuce and tomato. It's boring. But it works. I like baby spinach leaves in stead of lettuce. Sometimes I like sun dried tomatoes. Sometimes I do Romas. If I do Roma tomatoes, I often like thin sliced red onions.

Tangy stuff. This would usually be some kind of pickled element. Pickles are the most obvious. But you can do the traditional pickled cucumber AND pickled peppers of some kind AND EVEN other pickled veggies. It's YOUR sandwich. You make the rules. I like a slice of kosher dill, several pepperoncini, and jalapenos. If you had skipped the olive salad earlier, now is a good chance to reconsider that mistake.

So there you have it. This weeks ideal sandwich. Next weeks will be different.

It has been a while since I took a stroll down to the Hole in the Wall barbecue place that's nearby. This thread alerted me to the fact that a sloppy pulled pork sandwich is calling. Thanks. I appreciate the reminder.
Are you up near Pinky's BBQ truck on 45th? I really like their variety of sammies, & their homemade mac-n-cheese with the broiled breadcrumbs on top is the bomb! drool

Yep. That's pretty close to the house. I don't usually stop at Pinky's though. It's right next to Bravo, which was in a truck but move into the old Winchell's doughnut shop. A burrito from there is my idea of a really good thing. My son, who has become a burrito snob since living in LA, approves of Bravo. Hole in the Wall is downtown, not exactly in Pioneer Square, but close enough. You have to ask for their extra hot sauce, because they won't tell you about it. I like it a lot, and it's a good excuse to get out for a walk. It's on the way to Emerald City Guitars. That's a good reality check when work weirdness starts seeming normal.
