Oh yeah, the romantic side of woodworking... sunbeams coming through the window, dust motes in the air, umlauts curled up and napping by the wood burning stove, a well-worn workbench, gossamer-thin plane shavings falling gently to the floor... But then I look at the calendar and I have less then 2 freaking weeks to wrap this up!!!!!! I need to get moving! :laugh:

Thanks! It's a design that doesn't likely have wide appeal, but it's one that I had in my head for a long time. I've always liked the smaller bodied basses and this is sort of my take on an exaggerated Tune shape. It doesn't look so much like that now, but that was my starting point. Things really started to change when I started to draw in some contour lines. Those turned into carve guidelines and the whole thing becomes even slimmer and more pronounced.

So, it's sort of morphed into a more extreme design than I originally had in mind, but I like it. I have a couple ideas for a few more designs kicking around in my head that I need to bring to reality soon... I think I've built enough of this one for now. :D

Here's a little update on the 12 string bass. I've been busy making templates and getting all the routes completed on the bass. I've also cleaned up and fitted the truss rod door (not pictured).

Headstock winglet routes.

Today the goal is to get some accent wood glued to the headstock winglet areas and to fit a nut.

Mission accomplished today. I used some figured Gabon ebony to highlight the winglets on the headstock. That took a lot of fiddly template making and fitting. But I think it came out pretty well. I also got a nut rough cut and ready to go.

I few more details need to be taken care of like electronics layout, control and truss rod cover screws, etc. But I think at this point I'm ready to go back over the carving one more time, then start sanding up through the grits.

It's not likely that I'll post any more photos until I'm finished, so wish me luck, I may just squeak this one in under the deadline! :thumbsup:

That's a beautiful headstock. I'm so happy to see someone else using side veneers on headstocks, I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do that.

I totally understand that posting updates/photos and making the deadline can be tricky, props for sharing the headstock details. Can't wait to see this one finished.

Yeah @Gary_M I will echo the comments on that headstock. I know you struggled with getting your standard headstock to transition to this 12 string. But dude, you've literally knocked it out of the park. It works so well and still makes the statement that it is your design. :thumbsup:

Also, the body shape is awesome looking. This entire build is stunning. I hope that some day I can build something on that level. You inspire me dude. :cool:

Thanks for the kind words, everyone, they are very much appreciated. :)

I finalized my electronics arrangement and layout this morning only to realize that I don't have the knobs that I need. Amazon to the rescue... I hope... lately the "Prime" shipping option is more of a suggestion than a reality, so here's hoping the correct items show up in a timely fashion. :D

As soon as I wrap up work for the day, it's out to the garage to begin the final shaping/sanding marathon. My goal is to have finish applied by later this week with assembly and setup taking place over the weekend. At this point, any screw-up or delay could be a "game over" situation... so I need to stay focused and not pull some boneheaded move. :D

That would be a great idea, except that I need a mix of stacked and standard knobs... and I don't have enough stacked knobs. I guess I could just mix and match. LOL
