Yes but his parents are immigrants. It's ironic that he places a lot of value on education and also judges people by their education. An yet he never seen a problem using this word. Thanks for correcting my spelling.:p

I have also known very intelligent people with very little ecucation. They may have been terrible spellers but they could re-build a high performance engine from the ground up or could grade a huge area to make it level enough for a landing field. They weren't lazy either writing and reading were just not their thing. They would rather build an addtion on their house than read a good novel.
There are all kinds of education and skills. It is a mistake for me to judge others by my strengths. Or even to judge myself by what others can do that I can't.

Misspellings I can deal with, you can usually figure out what they meant pretty easily. A lack of punctuation is what tangles my cord.

There was a thread awhile back where the op wrote in one GIANT run on sentence. When I called him out on it, he responded that he didn't think punctuation was important on the internet. I've dealt with many trolls online, but none had ever made me want to reach through my monitor and strangle them quite like that one...

I find the "it's just the internet" argument a bit unsettling. If you can't spell or use words correctly on the internet, you likely cannot anywhere else either.

We're not talking about simple typos and other flubs. I bang out responses as quickly as I can type them. I invert letters, drop words and make other common mistakes all the time. But, some folks that post are either in the third grade or ought to be again.

I remember reading a rant by someone on TB who said they were very good on bass because they had 30 years of experience.

Of course, this same person also had 30 years experience with English and couldn't spell simple words properly...they somehow missed the irony :D

That there are people on the internet who live in countries where English is not the native language?

That there are people on the internet who suffer from dyslexia and other forms of learning disabilities?

Crazy, huh? And yes, some people are just plain lazy, but some of the more overzealous grammar-nazi's out there really must live some pretty empty lives, try giving people the benefit of the doubt, I'm sure it won't kill you.

Oh, and there are also people on the internet who post drunk. Or on meth. Addiction is a horrible thing people!:D

It bugs me when people don't value the language enough to bother spelling words correctly. But obviously not everyone values the same things (and not everyone is privileged enough to have had a good academic education). There are people from all kinds of backgrounds here on Talkbass - and that's great. There are also a lot of folks here for whom English is not a first language (something that sometimes gets forgotten I think). So it bugs me but without knowing a person's background it's kind of wasted energy.

There's quite a difference between those using "net shorthand" and those who literally cannot spell.

The former, I usually have no issue with, for as long as I get the gist of what they're trying to convey, I am fine.

Those who obviously could not spell their way out of a two letter word spelling contest? Well...I guess it bothers me a bit, more out of an odd, misplaced, genuine concern as to WHY they cannot spell, or differentiate grammar, etc...but most of the time it doesn't make me feel their point doesn't merit consideration.

It's an internet chat board, not an online college (and don't get me started on some of the things that relatives who teach in college show me that their students have actually passed in as work, holy cow. )

Yeah, I lower my expectations for an Internet forum. Sometimes, there are foreigners whose primary language isn't English. Then, you have people with poor education but are part of the forum for the same reasons as everyone else.
It's more irritating to read unedited text in more formal settings, like an online newspaper's article. It's like there an expectation for newspaper articles to be proofread, but there seems to be a lack of time and effort spent to proofread an online news article.
