Schpelling

Spelling errors don't bother me at all, especially if its obvious it was an error.

Blatant, voluntary misspelling is a different issue. I don't care for the voluntary butchering of words. But the occasional errors due to a lack of attention to detail, or spell checker/auto correct issues are often difficult to be 100% prefect about.
No harm, no foul!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the thing that drives me crazy, over most anything else is the use of unneeded excessively large words.
Often seems like everyone becomes a genius all of a sudden when they're online.
A bunch of angry big word ninjas.

Which if you watch threads play out you can actually see a completely ridiculous underlying battle of who can use the bigger word. It almost always becomes competitive and is probably one if the most ridiculous things to watch.
This is ESPECIALLY noticeable during squabbles online, not just here but almost everywhere.
There are those who use big words all of the time, these are NOT the ones I'm referring to.

Almost all TB arguments in a nut shell;

Blah Blah Blah!

-Some horribly over thought out, grammatically, & punctually perfected sentences.

-A few 'ridiculously' larger than necessary words, peppered in to uphold those powerfully important Internet appearances everyone couldn't live w/o.

-Followed by some half witted, pun-filled excrementitious :-) BS that makes them seem cleverly well versed, & hysterical to everyone online that doesn't know them.

-Add to it with a CRAP LOAD of passive aggressive insults, as blatant aggressiveness would surely get the mods involved.

-Combine ingredients!

-Mix well with personal morals, & personal attacks for their lack of conformity to their opinions.

-Add love.

-post in pre-heated thread, then wait with for anticipated response, and repeat until one has been outwitted.

Here's a little spin on misspelling. Take a look at this paragraph. Can you read what it says? All the letters have been jumbled. Only the first and last letter of each word is in the right place. According to research at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole.

I cnduo't bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. I find the "it's just the internet" argument a bit unsettling. If you can't spell or use words correctly on the internet, you likely cannot anywhere else either.
Agreed. Plus, we do so much on the Internet in general these days, whether it's working, socializing, etc. No harm in an occasional typo, but some folks are just plain lazy. I skip over their posts and make no apologies for that.

A bunch of angry big word ninjas...

How do you differentiate between those who use excessively large words online and those who actually speak that way?

Spelling mistakes are considerably less obnoxious than hashtags.

There are certain things that drive me crazy. You think I'm going to tell you what they are so you can irritate me like I would do to you. Ha! My own little quirks are mine and trying to get to the world or even Talkbass to conform to my standards is a lesson in futility and frustration. I can't change everyone else so the best thing for me to do is try and deal with my own issues.

And thanks to everyone for dealing with my poor spelling. :p

It used to be annoying, when I was younger, and to the extent of my own obsessive -compulsiveness, I try to be as
"correct" as possible with spelling and punctuation. However, when I got interested in the history of language several years ago, I found that "Correct" spelling is a fairly recent phenomenon (sorry for the big word). Until the end of the 17th century, English was spelled pretty much however you wanted. It wasn't until Samuel Johnsons Dictionary was published that the idea of standardized spelling began to really catch on. Maybe what we're seeing now is an example of "Forward- Into the Past!" Or else, people are just getting dumber by the day???:D
