Schpelling

Look dude, this is the internet. There are no teachers looking over us. And quite frankly, spelling, or lack thereof, is a technicality on forums. Honestly.

I see it like this. Is the statement more important than the spelling?

Lets say you read a post that says something like :" Today I beat my kid cuz I was drunk and he wouldn't shut up."

Are you going to give him a row for writing out "cuz" ?

I find this attitude disheartening, and how common it is all the more disturbing. Yeah, "it's the internet". I was taught that things like spelling, grammar, and proper punctuation were important whether you were writing a résumé or a grocery list.

I see it as lazy to write poorly, and it says a lot to me about the person writing. No, there's no teacher watching you, but it used to be people reached a point in maturity that they wanted to write correctly because they understood it was a direct reflection of them, and others would judge them on it.

But, in a world where every kid gets a trophy, and points don't matter..... what do you expect?

lighten up francis ! no one here is that stupid that we couldnt decipher a sentence if there were a few minor grammical errors.

But why should we? If the writer can't be bothered to put in the work to write clearly, why should the reader be expected to do the extra work to understand them? That's just expecting someone else to pick up the tab for one's own laziness.

I, too, believe that...

edit - Hmm, I see the person whom Ive corrected has deleted their post.

I assume you're talking about me. I deleted my post only to post after yours (as I thought you were correcting the OP and not my post). My original point still stands - it simply depended upon the context.

A common mistake is to use the word "their" when "his" or "hers" would be the correct choice. :D

I was playing with a lead guitarist once who kept hitting wrong notes when playing melodies. I took him to task over this and his response was, "relax, you could still make out the melody".

Okay, that never happened - but you get my point. :)

You're right! It's just a message board. Yet, when someone doesn't know something gear related some here think everyone should already know, a world-class shellacking will ensue.

Who'd have thought advocating intelligent communication would incur such a negative response? Yes, lighten up indeed. Let the dumbing down of humanity continue, if not accelerate. All due to what, laziness?

I mean, spell check is everywhere.... Hell, most computers phones, tablets, etc. even guess based on context (even if the writer doesn't know what that is). :hiding:

Sometimes it matters... ;)

I'm cool with that. I'm dutch and I bet that 80% of TB is not a native English speaker. So misspellings should be taken lightly. Just respect the fact that native English speakers don't have to type in German or french for example. They are trying their best and they learn as they go. Google translate and the works don't give comprehensive translations so that is not an option as well. Hell I've been raised bilingual and I bet that I make mistakes all over the place.
