I have just been sent some photos of my new Seven string Sei bass which I thought I would share with you all. It will be a couple of months untill it is finished but at least I have got something to look at while I am waiting. Matthew
Thanks guys, I will post some high res shots once she is in my hands, sometime towards the end of January I hope. Regards Matthew
Doesn't really matter if he wants to just use them as a thumb rest...does it? It's his bass. Who knows, maybe he WILL do extraordinary things...look at a few of the other ERB players on board. It's the same ol' Jaco only used 4 strings argument.
Wow that looks like a real cool bass, I really love the neck woods on that, What exactly is on that beauty?
My only problem with Sei Basses is that I do not have one.... That looks great man Congrats.... I love that body shape and the contrast of the Laminates on the neck.... - Tom
Yeah that flamed maple top and fretboard is pretty ridiculous...umm can I get one of these in the US?
Thanks for the comments guys, The top wood is flame sycamore over a wenge body and neck with flame sycamore stringers. Martin suggested doing a full facing on the back and I think it works well, especially with the nice contast in wood and how the neck seems to flow from the body. I am also particularly pleased with how the flame goes from top to bottom and how the flame manages to partially hide the frets. This was a bit of a gamble but I think it works well. I had Martin put 29 frets on this beast so that I have the range of an 8 string on 7. I probably won't be venturing too often into that territory so we decided to leave the bottom cutaway as is. But, as the neck profile front to back is very slim and I have long fingers I should manage. Now just waiting on the single custom Kent Armstrong pickup - no pre amp just straight too jack - and we will be ready to rock and roll. Regards Matthew
All I can do is go a little bit lower and a little bit higher. It certainly does not make me a better player, in some ways the adjustment to thinking and tecnique that is required is a hinderence. But it does keep my brain alive which is important. Also I like the process of sitting down with a master builder and talking through my wish list of what I would like in a bass. My two 7 string basses, one fretless and this one being built, will hopefully fulfil all my needs musically as well as giving me two stunning pieces of art. Regards Matthew
Thanks JT, Martin and I were aiming for a bass where the flame goes from head to toe and to this end, I think the fretboard seems to have worked really well. Also as it will be going straight to jack, there will be no knobs to mess up the front, not even a volume knob, so even more flame will be on show!.
Extremely pretty bass, Matthew ..... that board is truely unique! Sei basses have always been amazing looking, and from what I hear, great players as well ....... Keep us up to date with pics as you get them ......
Wow! That looks stunning. You really have great taste in your bass woods. I'm starting to GAS for another SEI (a flamboyant). I'm supposed to be up there next Saturaday, I think I'll try and take a look first hand at the WIP... Are you giging anywhere around London? I really would love to hear some music from those basses of yours. Anyway beautiful bass, I'm sure it will surpass your expecations. Matt
