SG & EB Bass Club

Well its been 3 weeks since I had a band practice witch is unusual but I finally got to experience the power of the flatwound strings. In a band setting I was so very impressed with them, cant believe how impressed I am actually. The combination of the Dimarzio neck pickup upgrade and the Ernie Ball flatwound strings launched my EB3 into a whole new sonic dimension. Of course amp settings,amp brands and pedals offer different tonal variety but with the upgrades its sonic bottom end tonal blissdrool. Flatwounds are my new best friends, gonna lace up all my basses with them eventually:thumbsup:

I put Roto 77 flats on my blonde SG Supreme and love em! Which flats are you using?

The Model 1 really brings the bass out of the mud, particularly towards the end of the track.

Thank you for doing a comparison, I know the genre I play may not be a popular choice but Im glad you gave it enough time to hear the difference. I pleased beyond expectation , with the addition of a second guitarist this mod made cutting through the mix possible.:thumbsup:

Hey all - have a project in the works and I thought I could pick y'all's brains. I am going to put some EMG guitar-sized humbuckers in this EB-3 copy i snagged off of CL. The question is, what do I do about these routing holes (specifically, the oversized hole for the bridge pup)? Should I fill it in and reroute or should I make some custom, wide pickup rings to cover the existing holes.

Also, for colors I was thinking of either doing a satin black or satin red with a black guard. Any other thoughts? I will likely remove the finish from the neck and refin in tru oil. I have another bass that is almost identical to this one with all original electronics and stuff, so I'm not worried about keeping it perfectly vintage.

I'd go with pickup rings.

If I was going to try to fill in and re-rout, I'd make the block stand slightly proud of the surrounding surface and use a router to shave it flush. Even then, I would plan on needing to shave about 1/64" off the top overall to get a transition that wouldn't show through the finish.

I'm about ten miles from my basses at the moment, but if I recall correctly, the string spacing at the bridge on my Gibson SG bass is 17.5mm (about .69"). But I'm using a Hipshot SuperTone bridge, which for all I know could be slightly different from the Gibson three-point bridge or the Babicz that they're using on the latest ones.

Same here. I was thinking 17mm. 17.5 sounds maybe a little more accurate. It is smaller but not uncomfortably so. Easier for me to adjust to my SG vs. a smaller spaced 5 string.

Mine has the Babicz for the record.

Thanks folks. So is the shorter spacing (used to 3/4") and the reported neck dive an issue with these?
