SGD Lutherie Pickups

I could, but that just adds to the time needed to build the pickup. As it stands at the moment, I have to make the bobbins from scratch. When you figure there's 8 bobbins in a 4 string pickup, that's a lot of extra work. Then there's two steel "keeper" bars that the pole pieces thread into.

What I would probably do is make a rubber mold and cast them in epoxy which is what Wal does for the 5 string pickups.

The Wal pickup has a thick tone, but with a crisp top end. The ND3s are probably a little more "open" sounding, since they have a lot less wire wound on them. The Wal is a darker sounding pickup than some people expect, but it's not muddy either.

But it's hard to put the differences into words. When I have some finished I'll record sound samples.

David- Doesn't the settings on the filter preamp have a lot to do with the final product of the tone, too? I mean Geddy Lee and Justin Chancellor are rather far apart on the tonal spectrum, but they used mahogany-bodied Wals with the same electronics. I always loved Wals because of that amount of versatility with just a few knob turns.

Yes, I think the filter has a lot to do with certain Wal tones. But the older Wals without the filter have the thick tone I was talking about. They Wal also had a mid boost and the "pick attack" treble boost. The newer version with the low pass filters still has the pick attack switch. My versionof the preamp will also have the Pick Attack.

Hello David,

I'm new to the forum, in fact this is the first and only forum I've registered on. I'm working with a friend of 30 years who is Luthier to have him build me a custom bass. This project is just getting off the ground finally and will probably span 3-4 months before completion. I would absolutely love to have a set of Wal clone pickups in this bass. Do you have any idea when these might become a reality?

If not, can you (or any one) suggest a set of pickups and electronics that would 1) Be the closets sounding to a Wal. And 2) Can easily be replaced if/when you do make your Wal clone pickups available.

I'm pretty excited, I just started renovating an old Modulus SweetSpot bass I own that hasn't seen much playing time after some poor upgrades on my part a few years ago. One of those renovations is an SGD 45 shape Neo Series 3 wide humbucker that I just ordered.

David, I know your website says that some pickup models are being shipped without logos, I'm fine with it either way, but do you know if your EMG 45 shaped covers have logos on them or not?

Excellent choice. ND3 pickups sound great in this position. Did you order the neck or bridge model?

Hi, I need some help with choosing pickups. I need set of soapbars in P2 size to wire with obp3, but am little confused with all this options, ND, Sidewinders, deep, narrow, wide...

sound I am searching for is all around for all types of modern music, which means pop, disco, but also jazz, funk...so I need lot of low end, but also nice highs for slap sound, and mid range for smoother music like latin jazz.

not really tending into vintage or rock...

some help would be appreciated
