That kind of self and customer respect makes Sheldon top of my book. Another major issue for a 7str is the amplification and cabs. Lugging many things around becomes tiring in no time, long term (for me at least)

Sheldon's and the Dingwall shop's attention to detail is extreme. Fer instance, Sheldon and I have discussed at length neck bolt finishes. I've tested 3 sets of neck bolts on my AB1 for finish wear. That's just one example. Think what something as involved as adding a 7th string (high or low) would do to that process!

Don't be scared! It actually makes playing EASIER! If you're really interested, you should take a closer look. Go to the Dingwall message board and ask if anyone within driving distance will let you try theirs out. You'd be surprised at how quickly people will volunteer to let you give it a go. I bought mine without trying. The frets took 0 minutes to adjust to. The extra string took a few days!

Hey Zach, If you read my response above, I'd suggest the same thing. I bet people would come out of the woodwork to let you give it a shot...

...and yes...that fretless seems like such a good idea!

"Cello cut" refers to Sheldon's Voodoo body shape. It hasn't been a production shape for years, but I took a chance and asked if he'd do it for me, and he said yes. :) It made me very happy. The body shape is just a little bit bigger than the current Z shape (more wood!).

In the earliest picture from the very beginning of the process, the shot has someone's shoes/feet in the shot...so it is like home snapshots in a way.

Although, I'm never bringing basses near a Dingwall, EVER!!!!!

The thing is that I've tried a Dingwall or two and I've found that although they sounded awesome, the fanned-fret thing just didn't do it for me.

Maybe I'll try some more later and find that I love them. Hopefully..........

Can you give me (and the others here) more insight into the 'didn't do it for me' idea? Are you referring to the feel, the look, or some other aspect?

Sheldon does make his own pickups. I've heard a rumor from a knowledgeable person that he also 'ghost winds' for a few other name luthiers. :)

It will probably be a week or so before any more pictures happen. Sheldon's gone on a family vacation, as he does every year at about this time. He's a bit of a work-a-holic (as his email of 2.22am proves) and he definitely deserves a break!(besides, who knows what new idea he'll come up with, with some rest)

No problem,

Well, I love the look, and the tone was to die for........

But the Fanned frets didn't feel as Natural or great as I was hoping that they would.

I'm guessing that I wan just in the wrong frame of mind or that I was expecting something different.

I'm always willing to try a Dingwall again later and be proven wrong....... ;)

I would love to love these things, but ATM, I'm not feeling the fanned frets.

Thanks! I will. There are hopefully some surprises in store. Sheldon has come up with a few new ideas and I think they're going to be cool. At least one idea is currently undergoing a feasibility study...so you know that means something good!

I'm actually happy to stay with the standard banjo size. I've played my AB hard for 3+ years now and have not had any fret problems, so I'm not concerned with fret life. I'm not sure I'm a good enough player to carry the Mando size either! :(

The Dingwall website is very outdated by now, the guys are much too busy making great basses to update it. Start browsing the Dingwall forums for all the latest ideas Sheldon is coming out with - he likes to post his black booth photos of finished basses once they are completed. Plus, the crowd over there is very friendly and (or course) die-hard Dingwallers.
