Thanks man! Its been an adventure getting this far, and there have been some very interesting ideas floated. I'm very much hoping that they come into fruition as planned.

My AB-1 is a whalepool blue bass, and I love the color. But, I can say that without hesitation, that Whalepool won't be one of the colors featured, and the burst will be unlike any found on any current Afterburner (possibly different than any other of Sheldon's basses). The neck inlays are also a new thing and a VERY cool suggestion made by him. I'm extremely interested to see how they come out.

Huh. To me they don't necessarily play different than parallel frets. I actually don't really notice them when I'm playing (but then, I'm 3 years in!). I notice what they do to tone, timbre and feel. My real trip is loud and low and clean. These basses stay clear and precise so that I can load the low end EQ on my rig and still be sure that I'll get what I want. I can also play a straight rock gig with flat tone acoss the spectrum and get crisp definition.

I don't do a whole lot of soloing or chording up past 12, so it could change my views on things.

See, I think thats where I had the most problems.

I have a 35 scale 6 string mostly because I like to do chording. I found that down low, the fanned frets weren't too bad, but up high, it was a different creature.

Again, maybe I just need to play a few more. I love the tone, so maybe learning to love em might be for the best... ;)

Its no doubt going to be an eye catcher. Not much understatement going on here!

Those who like natural and black basses will probably find this not to be their thing...I'm going to guess the reaction will be: :scowl::rollno::rolleyes::eyebrow::eek:

Especially if some of sheldon's ideas play out. Turns out he likes flashy.

Cool. If you look at the Z series thread over at the Dingwall site, you'll see that Sheldon posted another couple of 'group shots' with 7 new Z's coming. A LOT of these look to be spalted, and I recognize at least two of them...

Unfortunately, Sheldon's off on family vacation for a week so they'll 'age' at the shop for a bit!

As you know, mine is in the same batch of Zs as yours. It is the third from the left in the photo that Sheldon posted on the Dingwall forum:

The Spalted top was bleached to remove as much brown/tan as possible, and will be finished in a black-burst, with matching headstock. Same pickups as you are getting (switchable FD-3-Mach IIs), OBP-3 preamp, maple board with ebony markers.

For some of the nicer customs, it can be longer than that (Artist, Prima series). However, there are dealers who have standing orders. That's how I was able to pick up the phone and order a Super J5 Geddy without a wait. The dealer had waited over 2 years for it.

Ah, as Marshall also knew...I have a penchant for all music Jamaican. Its been a constant in my life, and I have no hesitation about standing behind the green-gold-red on stage! Better yet, this will be no regular burst. You know Sheldon pioneered a 'different' burst pattern or two in the shop!

I think that Sheldon sometimes makes his own headaches! He's actually come up with most of the unique tweaks on this bass. He of course knows when he finds someone receptive to his ideas. The inlays were his idea (oh wait, we're not mentioning them until they're done!). As are a few other bits and pieces...one of which will be VERY cool if it comes out as planned (its still under study by a team of experts and scientists at the top secret Dingwall Technological Research Institute).

Well, some of us are willing to wait for what we consider to be the best basses in the world. The real answer is that if you get one of the Afterburner series basses or a Super-J, you'll have an almost instant bass. But if you want a Zebra series or a Prima/Prima Artist, it could take a few days! I heard that one of DTRI's new years resolutions was to get the wait down to a year or less, which would be sweet! Until the release of the SJ-4, there was only a 6-10 month wait, but higher demand upon Sheldon as a business owner as well as higher demand for his basses combined with the shop's own obsession with detail and perfection have a price!

That's a sweet looking baby you've bought. I'm sure you'll be killin' with it.

I would love one in CAR with Rosewood board and pearl blocks/matching headstock...unfortunately, I'm also hooked on Sheldon's 34/37's!

Nice! I really like his maple boards, and they look great with the Blackburst finish. Is this the first bleach job he's done? Or is it something he does with all his blackburst finishes. He and I struggled to find a top that would do what we wanted with the finish colors on mine (ok, mostly he had to work it!)...
