Should we separate forums into sub-forums?

Perhaps it would be a good time to do some "forum rationalisation". For example, is it really necessary and justified to have two Off Topic Forums, two Theory forums, micellaneous, humour etc - maybe if there were a whole series of common forums, and then seaprate ones for Basses, Amps, pickups, setup etc, there addition of a few more forums for ERB's and EUB's would not further distil the conversation.

well, that's certainly an option that would work. the only issue i have with it is that it will focus just on the instrument, and i would like to see an erb forum where all topics could be discussed _as they pertain to extended range instruments_. topicality specifically erb related, not just instrument, but amp, technique, string, etc. information could be shared all in the same forum, as it pertains to the "extended range" experience.

I have to say this....

I can't believe you guys/gals are even having this severe of an argument over something so trivial. :rolleyes: You're getting all worked up over what someone might do/say/think/proclaim about you or your choice of instrument on a faceless, virtually anonymous forum. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but we're not talking about anything really life shattering here. My God, some of you need to grow up. Spend more time practicing and less time talking smack about ignorant discussion that at the end of the day won't matter.

Personally, alot of flaming goes on in all of the forums, so while a subcatagory might be useful, I would say if you want to talk ERB to people who can respectfully talk ERB, and if you want to gain TONS of useful information, I would suggest you go here:

As I have never seen any post get out of control. Maybe some polite disagreements, but nothing like what goes on here...unfortunately.

There are many players there that I have never seen a post from here and that is a shame, because the stuff they have to offer is usually applicable to bass as a whole.

After reading the many points expressed in this thread and giving this a lot of thought, I've reached a decision. An EUB forum is in our near future, but I believe the splintering of the BG forums into subforums is not something that will happen soon. If the Basses forum were to be splintered into several sub-forums, the other public forums such as Amps will beg for a similar structure. So we're talking about a fairly massive overhaul. At some point in the future I may decide this is a wise course for TalkBass to take - but not right now.

Originally John and I discussed an alternate ERB forum solution, I'll be speaking with him privately about that, and we'll see how it goes :)

If you wish to continue discussion in this wonderful little thread it will remain open.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread. Figured I'd give my input anyway.

I think having an ERB forum is a good idea, as it would give us a place to ask other ERBassists about ERB specific things (be it amps or instruments or strings or whatever). This is good because, playing ERB, I have different needs for all aspects of playing and of equipment. So it isn't easy to get useful input when 99% of the forum users don't play ERB and don't know what it is.

ERB is different in many ways (perhaps in more ways than DB is different from BG - but that depends on how you see it), and so it makes sense to have a forum where the signal/noise ratio can be kept high.

I'd suggest an Extended Range Bass forum under BG.
And probably an Electric Upright Bass forum under DB.

I think if its done, thats the way to do it. If it grows enough then for organizations sake we can add to it and seperate it into its own section.

When it comes to whether or not an ERB sub forum or a new ERB forum is needed, there will always be two forms of thinking. Before the moderators make a choice I hope they will take a few things into consideration:

1) Music has evolved vastly from its first form, and so must the musician. Consequently, the bass world and talkbass have also evolved greatly since their beginnings. One must be willing to change with the times or get lost in hypocrisy. If someone twenty years ago announced that there would be an 8,9,10 or 11 string basses, he would have been deemed crazy. This, however, is not the case anymore. Unfortunately, but fortunately at the same time, these instruments are only available from independent luthiers instead of big corporations. The evolution of the bass will hopefully never stop, shouldn't a forum dedicated to basses do the same?

2) The sub forum that is being proposed has nothing to do with segregation; it will provide a great form of integration. The idea of the ERB sub forum or forum is not about making ERB people feel comfortable to talk in a secluded area, it is about being able to inform an enormous amount of people. Isn't this what talkbass is all about?
Many of the people out there that play ERBs might not know of all of the little websites that are out there (sorry Greg), so shouldn't there be a place on talkbass that can embrace this?

I know that not everyone will agree about the necessity of an ERB sub forum or forum, but as a musician aren't we all supposed to be open-minded and embrace other musicians? At least that is what I like to think a true musician is.
