Should we separate forums into sub-forums?

Respect means telling people the truth, whether they can accept it, or not.

I think this is the kind of attitude JT is talking about. "The Truth"?? It sure seems like we're talking about folks that are making choices about what instruments they want to play - and then having a place online - here at TB - where they can gather with like-minded individuals.

It has less to do with 'uniting' or dividing bassists (IMO) and more about being able to find information. Lets face it - even in the last couple of years since I joined, TB has grown by leaps and bounds. There are easily hundreds of posts on just about any topic - so organizing the posts and segmenting them means noobs can find info on what they want - faster - and chances are, they will come back. If a new bassist comes here, gets hassled - > or can't find info that they are looking for - they probably won't be back.
Just my $.02.

I've taken the time to answer the points you raised in your question individually, thoughtfully, and politely.

I've used no insult, mockery, or perjorative language in my post, and this is what I get? Is this respect?

Well, your "Truth" comment sounded pretty much like perjorative language - insinuating that you have some 'truth' that ERB-ers don't. And it certainly wasn't polite.

JT wasn't insulting - he was sarcastic.

Next I'm waiting for the Jaco line......... :hmm:

This is what set me off John...

but whatever, I'd still love to buy you a coffee and jam sometime :bassist: (not that I could keep up  )

and in turn, my original comment that set you off was motivated by you accusing me of somehow denegrating your instrument.

Once again, "playful banter/hassling" shouldn't be tolerated on any forum "where respect for all members is rule #1".

IMHO it all sounds like "we play 7+ strings, let'em eat cake"

but in the end.... I surf via "get new" so it's all just one big forum to me :ninja:

nice. i don't see where you get the let'em eat cake line except to mock me. i didn't suggest limiting the forums to not cater to someone else's instruments, you did, hence the "let'em eat cake". i don't like the way this discussion is going, and i'd rather not continue it this way, but i have a real problem with being accused of saying things that i did not say.

wow, if this isn't a smouldering thread, I'm scared to think of what is!

I think a number of good points have been raised by a number of TBers. as someone who plays beautiful mutants (I love that phrase -- can I use it in a song title?), I thought I'd chime in here.

when I first joined TB many moons ago I was a 6 stringer and had been since the mid-80's. I'd played 5 (since around '86) before that. my first real post was one seeking advice for controlling the dynamics of the Conklin 8 I was having built.

I was, to put it bluntly, blasted. I didn't understand why my question had triggered such outright hostility and I left the board for about 6 months before I even thought of posting again.

now I will say that things have changed dramatically and for the better in the years since. a number of ERB players and forums all over the web have brought attention and some understanding to the instruments we sling and some of what we face.

do I feel a separate ERB forum or sub-forum would be helpful? well, I think the point was made that ERB players coming to TB for the first time would have a place to gravitate immediately, as EUB player with their own forum/sub-forum would. I don't know that I think of that as elitist necessarily. separatist, maybe.

moreover, if you read pretty much any of the longer ERB threads you will find the point being made by a number of cats that they don't see basses with 7+ strings as being basses any more, but as related string instruments. again, I don't know that I agree or disagree with this, I'm just trying to point out what I have read.

John's point about there being different needs for cats with 7+ strings is well taken and wholly valid. by having a different place to post these sorts of topics, others would not have to deal with our unique gripes although they would have the option of reading.

John also mentioned that the creation of an "ERB zone" would have no impact on the forums already in use. I think this is true as well.

I see myself and everyone involved in this site as a musician. our choices of instrument are different but our experiences and outlooks are similar. I would never compare myself at any level with someone like Billy Sheehan, but I can still dig his music and the way he plays. we may not have musch in common aside from "carbon-based bipedal musician type", but I can think of few places where we could both discuss what we love with others who get it.

should there be another forum? dunno. would having it draw more ERB types to TalkBass, who might then move into other forums and read what's going on? absolutely.

back to practice!

:bassist:

from the lows,

Stew

To me, the funniest issue is that I would have claimed the 4 stringers are WAY more abused than the ERB'ers. I've taken tons of flak here (and abroad) for preferring 4 strings. Shows the difference in perception! ERB'ers certainly take no more flak than any slice of slab population (Sadowsky! Fretless! 12 strings! Pbass! Graphite! etc, etc, etc...).

Agree with this.

How many times do you see someone post a 4 string and someone says "that bass would be perfect if it had 1 more string"?

How is that any different from posting a 7 string and someone saying "that bass would be great if it had one less string"?

There are a few topics that are near and dear to my heart that I would love to sub-forum on

For example;
effects/ME-50b
amps/ampeg/svt3pro
bassists/James Jamerson, Geddy Lee, ect...

 Agreed! lots of good and valued opinions here.

I only babelfished (altavista's translater webpage) the Italian thread title and that is what I got  Use it!! I could never do it justice ;)
(just send me a copy!)

My claim has only ever been that by splitting up the forums just to avoid the controversy, we are avoiding the real solution to the problem, which is simply to demonstrate to people, through unequivocal musical evidence, that there is a reason to play these instruments.
Un - That's certainly a good point. I think how to avoid the controversy is what is being looked at.

I also have to agree with Stew Mc - the forums have certainly changed over the past couple of years.

Listening to the music is it! If anyone can hear Lord Only, Stew Mc, Yves Carbonne - > lots of other folks - man - the music is awesome! I love what they are doing with ERB's......it's music!!

Curiously, the post of mine that you quoted here appears to have disappeared from the forum, at least, I cannot seem to find it going backward or by searching the archive for my username. Anyone have any idea what could cause a message to spontaneously disappear?

If it was in breach of the forum rules, or not relevant to the thread at hand, a moderator (in this case Paul) may have deleted it. It looks like a number of posts in this thread have been removed. I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah - me. For the good of Talkbass let's try to keep this on topic and cut out the useless arguements.

Ah! In fact, a series of posts from this account have been removed. I suppose the lesson here is that if you can't beat them, delete them.
The posts were not likely to have been deleted by John as he is not the moderator in this forum. Although he could have done it (I think he is a super moderator), I think the most likely person to have done it is paul (TB admin). If you have an issue with it, you should take it up with paul privately and not in the forum (as per the forum rules).

There have been a lot of good points raised in this thread, and for them I offer my thanks. Let's step back from the ERB 'controversy' if we could though and keep focused on the broader issue of subforums. Just to clarify: There are 16 Bass Guitar forums right now - If we create new forums they would either appear in the BG forum list, creating more than 16 BG forums. OR, they could be enclosed sub-forums, meaning they'd be visible only when the user clicks onto the parent forum. For example, a user sees 16 BG forums - but if he clicks into "Basses[BG]", he'd see a list of sub-forums at the top (ERB, fretless, etc), above the threadlist. We are NOT talking about adding a new category next to BG and DB.
