Show me your compact pedalboard setup

Begrudgingly accepting the fact that COVID is with us for a while, I finally mounted my quarantine pedals (i.e., the few I was able to rescue from my studio before the city locked down) onto a couple strips of MDF* just to make them easier to get out of the way when it comes time to vacuum the rug:

It's compact, convenient, and totally low-rent!

*btw, calling this crap "MDF" is definitely giving it the benefit of the doubt. It's really more like LDF: The cheesiest, most structurally-unsound strips of wood composite I've ever encountered. When I walked into the room carrying an 8' strip of this crap the ceiling fan decimated it without even suffering from a mark or dent, and when I went to saw through it it took less than three strokes. Definitely not "road-ready"

I'm sure I'm not the only one wishing there was a video of that!

:D
Maybe you could be so kind as to recreate that moment for the camera. :hyper:

Not the neatest, not the flashiest, but I think I'm about done for now... I've gone from a huge board, through dozens of iterations, and this is where I am, for what I need...

Well... for now

Pedal Board 2020.08.25.jpg

Hi @Blue Swede ! Let us know how you route the signal and why you use a HPF/LPF and then a Thumpinator. Thanks.

Sure thing, ended up a bit of a write up.

So i play a Sadowsky 5 string and (currently) like to keep bass and treble quite high, say around 70-100%.

From there the signal goes into the Broughton hpf/lpf which its set at 30ish Hz for low and 5-6K for high, boost is off. I run it at 18 volts for the highest possible headroom allowed by my PSU.

then it goes into the Effectrode LA-1A. It’s set for low compression with slow attack and a soft knee to just let the tone marinate through the tubes and level the signal out a bit, gain set for unity. I have it as an always on...

After that we’re onto the Source Audio C4 synt, which in all honesty I have not spent enough time fiddling with yet.
On the 6 presets there’s:
An oc2 patch, a bass synth, a bit crusher, two envelope filters and some other patch. I’ve used it a bit with my band but it’s mainly for noodling at home.

The sfx thumpinator is an awesome little pedal, I first got it for keeping low end rumble in check before the signal hitting compressors, keeping them from activating constantly. But I am testing it out after the C4 synth so the octavers/envelope filters don’t go too low causing issues/damage to our PA system. Time will tell if it’s needed.

I use the FEA LABS dual band compressor limiter second last to further even out spikes in my sloppy playing (should spend more time practicing maybe). I set it up as as a limiter, only using the left side of it. I have the crossover set around 9 which evens out the very low notes and only activate the other side if I slap, which admittedly is rare with the band. I have the threshold far counterclockwise to only affect the spikes, as well as short attack and release times. Gain is set high cause I like how it sounds.

The Noble DI is the final touch before signal goes FOH. I set bass and treble depending on room and is hpf if needed ( 3rd one in line mind you). It’s just an awesome piece of kit that also works well without any of the other gear for recording for example.

Hidden underneath is a Cioks DC 7 future. My 4th power source in as many years. I should’ve just gotten this to start off with and saved a bunch of money cause it just works!

Oh and the tuner is there for tuning. It works but I’ve contemplated replacing it as I have this nonsense notion that it’s a tone sucker.... and we can’t have that now can we!

Admittedly, this board is WAY overkill for my gigs and ability. But I love gear almost as much as playing, and it helps to keep me motivated! :bassist:

I have this talkbass to thank for most of the items on the board. A special thanks to Bongomania and scubaduba Who have spent so much time and effort on their review sites. I spent a significantly smaller amount of time and money reading about and buying compressors they recommended rather then doing it all by myself. And I really like the combination of the LA-1A and the FEA DB-CL. :D

It’s cool setup. I don’t think you need to worry about the Polytune as a tone suck it’s tru bypass and your hitting it with a hot signal from an active bass you should be fine. I’ve never noticed a time suck with mine in several rig configurations.

Not so much for bass, but pulled this lil' bugger together to get to know the Vongon Paragraphs and dang I'm SUPER impressed with how lush and rich it sounds. Moog level filter. I just got the OBNE pedalboard headphone amp and I LOVE it. It gives me the flexibility to pull together a small board to jam anywhere with using headphones. Great for checking things out with too.

Its here...and it sounds like some kind of kraken or leviathan is awakened from the deepest depths ! It replaced my trustworthy MT-2 and i have to admit i am hugely impressed both from standard and custom mode. Lower gain, increased note definition and clarity is what custom mode can offer, along with better bass response. I see even less loss of low end than my old MT2 and the dual cocentric knobs feel reaaaally smooth. ( I love japanese industry ) If you could find the good tones hidden in the old MT-2 you ll be amazed by the waza version.

9-1-2020 Road Runner ICONIX.jpg I put this little odd and end board together for a jam with a cover band that should cover all the needs nicely. Mooer Sweeper > TCE Sub n Up Mini > Hjart Muller Lo|Fet bass overdrive > Fuzzrocious BDPG V2 > Zoom B2.1u. The drummer has a Mark Bass stack for me to play through so I don't even have to take an amp and it's in the next neighborhood over. 9 tunes should be a nice jam.

Finally took the time to design and build a passive hpf / lpf. So far, this is only a prototype for testing at home and at the next rehearsal. In the future, I will replace the case and choose the best place on PB. But the chain will most likely remain as it is now: bass -> dual muff fuzz [diy] -> source audio soundblox pro multiwave bass distortion -> zoom ms-60b -> passive hpf / lpf [diy] -> mxr bass d.i. +

I enjoyed the blue version of that Zoom pedal for a while, such a useful box!

In case anyone is interested in using the BCB30 in slightly unusual ways...
I removed the centre-left plastic framing with a hot soldering iron and added the carpet to raise the EBS so that in and out Jack's don't hit the plastic.

Works great ... and maybe even room for one more :)

How do you like EBS MB3?

I own EBS MB2 myself...
