This appears to be the same Koa top as mine. Rob showed me that finish and I said I want it but then he told me what it cost. I went with the standard finish. The cello stain is gorgeous.

You know, this may be the best of all possibilities. You get the great UB sound of a Mouse Bass and the ability to play in the octave above the G string for soloing. I am sure it sounds much different than a 34" scale deep.

Sorry, I've yet to measure it. I will say the neck is wide but over time you adapt. The same goes for fret lines. You don't need them. Over time you hear the notes and automatically adjust your intonation. After playing my Deep 5 for a while, my Fender JB neck feels like a toy.

When I learned cello as a child, I started with two strips of tape on the neck. One at the first finger, the second at the forth finger. As soon as possible, my teacher removed the tape and I was flying free, never to turn back.

Been playing Rob Allen's for about 12 years now. I have three of Rob's basses and love em all:
5 string fretted - High C
5 string fretless - low B
4 string fretless Mouse

I am fortunate to perform and record often with multiple bass groups. These basses always sound incredible. I will post a couple of pics and add some links where you can see/hear the basses in action. (sorry I don't have cool portrait pics of the basses)

Rob's is exactly like my 5 string fretted with High C. His has a Walnut Top.
Listen to this one an you can hear it even clearer.
(push ahead to 1:40 for RA solo)

Very good observation Doc. My favorite characteristic of the fretted 5 is it's classical guitar sound. You also mention the tones of the basses complimenting each other. Well, Rob and I play a lot together and he purchased his bass to specifically fit with mine. I loved his so much that I then bought the same, fretted high C. Because I play bass ensembles regularly, this bass always is a perfect fit with the other steel stringed guys.

I have played some classical music with this bass. It sounds killer!
