This is a review I wrote when I first got the LDS. I never posted it since I knew I would get a lot of "it isn't real if there are no pictures". So I'll post it now.
Some background. I was playing a P-bass through an iAMP 500 into a CXL-112. The CXL was farting out, so I rented an SWR Goliath Junior III to try adding more speaker area. WOW, what a difference. The band (trio, very Canadian, eh?) played tighter and kept commenting over and over how much better the bass sounded.
So I went looking for a new speaker. It was a thread here on TB that mentioned Low Down Sound. I emailed LDS and got some replies about 12" cabs from Don Oatman. I then phoned him. We discussed what I wanted: a classic rock oriented speaker, fingerstyle, no slap. Since Don is a bass player, I immediately got a warm fuzzy that he knew what I was talking about. He recommended the 1x12 with a 1x6 instead of a tweeter.
Weight was a consideration. A 2x12 would have been cheaper/more convenient than 2 1x12s. But I wanted every piece of equipment at 50 pounds or less. The LDS is about 55 pounds, which I can live with.
The price was great, and I could get it with a bedliner coating rather than carpeting for an extra 10%. (If you have cats, you will know why I wanted this.)
During the process, I got update phone calls from Don or his staff.
Finally it came. It is hard to compare this cab to the CXL-112 since they are very different cabs, but I will try. The LDS is bigger (20"x18"x16") and as mentioned heavier.
The LDS has the blue background. The blue is darker than shown on the website and adds a touch of colour without being overly flashy. I was a bit nervous about getting the blue, but I am really happy with it.
The CXL-112 is much louder and can go much lower (and higher due to the tweeter). The iAMP deep switch makes a huge difference on the CXL-112, very little on the LDS cab. Crank the tweeter all the way up and you can use the CXL-112 to play CDs through.
The LDS has a much higher power rating. The CXL-112 is rated 350W, the LDS has a 500W 12" speaker and, with the 6", is rated 650W. And it shows. For the first practice with the new speaker, I forgot my second speakon cable. I had to run the iAMP harder to get the same volume, but the LDS never farted out that I noticed.
The LDS really nails a rock or blues or country sound without being muddy. I feel it has strong mids, (stronger than the CXL-112) and responds well to cranking the mids. When used with the CXL-112, the CXL-112 tends to overpower it. But the LDS adds a real vintage tone to the CXL-112. They compliment each other very well.
I don't miss the tweeter
I probably need to post about twenty or so updates, but let's just try this one for now.
