Show your Bill Fitzmaurice cab

Im building (for yet another year lol) a 40w or 50w tube head, Since its inspired on the ampeg B15, vintage-y sounds as the direction to go in the cab choice. How's the O12Top to go with it? Mass neighborhood deafness is not required (as I have an acoustic 330 also waiting for a bigger cab).

1) Do you think that omni12top 2x12 is the cab to go?

2) I'm worried about the price of the drivers and the wattage they take: since I'll only drive 50-ish watts to them, Are there any other recommended drivers for this box that are cheaper and less powerful? Eminence Alphas are still a little too much for my budget, but if they are the only way to go well...
(Almost 200 u$s for each for 2 of them makes it half my salary -.- the rest of the parts, plans included is well inside the budget 'thou)

I really like the looks of the blond duratex and, also, the white that Zac used on his fibreglass cabs. I'm wondering how resistant the light colours will be to scuffs and such. Just wipe 'em down with a wet cloth?

work on just about anything...amazing stuff. But I have NO experience with them on Duratex.

Cheers,
Cameron

All of our plans come with a list of drivers that are recommended because we know they will work. It's rather silly to go through all the work required to build a fine cabinet and then potentially screw up the works by going with a cheap driver. BTW, the Alpha 10 is not recommended, and you'd be getting royally screwed to pay $200 for $50 drivers.

I'm surprised I haven't posted my bass cart here. So, here it is:

Here's a link to a short video:

Note the cabinets are facing towards the field, and not the camera.

I also built two Omni TB15 cabinets:

The cabinets have always performed well, and are ideal for unpredictable weather situations.

The light colored duratex seems to be pretty easy to clean up.

The avatar 2510's sound GREAT, and I got them for a $song$. They arent recommended, mostly because the real 2510's are so highly regarded and the increased xmax of the avatars comes without increased xlim, so (i think) you are operating with less of a fried-driver-safety net. Also, it was stated that the midrange would be reduced at the expense of the potential theoretical increased output due to the increased xmax.

With a bass guitar, I cant tell a difference (sonic) at all compared to the eminence S2010's, which are listed as an alternate driver.

Bottom line, if you are looking for an economical lightweight alternative to the recommended DL2510 and can live with less than the best...

I just ordered some of the budget MCM non neo driver for comparison. they are on clearance for $13 each with coupon and were once recommended as an acceptable alternative (pre-dl2510). We'll see.

Check Bill website. There is a guy Marko Ursine from europe who built an INSANE looking OT212 using the alternate MCM brand drivers and no tweets. They look like a million bucks. He posted a pic with a darkstar's hollowbody as well, with a DIY tube head. It's unreal.

Anyway, he'd be a good candidate to ask opinions on how the MCM drivers work. Same application.

i have a question that i so far have'nt seen talked about

what is the "throw" of the various bass friendly models? for instance is the 0t15 tallboy short/medium or long throw, what is the omini top etc etc? i've been wonderng about this for awhile and have'nt seen it brought up

Where bass frequencies are concerned there's no such thing as throw.

@Crockettnj: I saw the same post the other day, thats why I began thinking of this cab, just thought I'd run the question with you guys :p

Tnx for your answer!
I agree 100% with you, if I decide for your O12T I'll get a couple of drivers you recommend for it. The thing is I'm in Argentina, and that kind of stuff is expensive. 200$ IS the price over here. And given the low watt use I'm about to give to them I thought I ask wich cheaper drivers are recommended. Cheaper as in lower costing, not bad quality, you know.

Thanks for reading, see ya!

I am pretty sure you could get drivers shipped to you from the US for less :)

You could get a 3012HO shipped to you from Speakerhardware for around 50 bucks it looks like, for example so a total of 200. I imagine it would get to be less if you were using multiple drivers.

+1/2, as the 3012 would be massive overkill with a low power tube amp, the 2012 would be plenty. You'd also be able to get the rest of the hardware, which also may be hard to find in your own country, which, BTW, you should add to your profile.

ok got it. i was confused because i'm thinking the various folded horns of old, like a sunn 2000s cab and guys saying they really would'nt 'develop" until 20 feet out or so. your volume would seem fine onstage but you'd be giving knocking down walls in the back of the room.

another question if you don't mind bill. i Really love what marco did with his vintage treatment of his omni top 2-12. in other posts i've read the cab "drops like a stone" below 100hz, and that's verified by the graph. i too use small tube amps for bass (bassman). it also says elsewhere that the cab sounds a lot like vintage cabs but is obviously a whole lot more efficient, which is also right up my alley. my question is, did those old cabs really drop off that early and rapidly down to 40 (open E) hertz too? i'm thinking of a dual showman or a kustom 2-15 with a pair of d-140's, a B15, that sorta thing. i'm just trying to get a better picture of your cab is al; the tone and feel of old vintage cabs i know quite well, and if yours behaves similarly it looks like i'll definitely have to build one. i'd love an omni 15 lowboy best but i just can't do it as i live in a very tiny house and have a tiny car! oh yes, that ot12 of marco's looks mighty appealing indeed. thanks in advance

Myth. You couldn't hear them up close due to boundary cancellations. When the listener moved back from the boundaries the problem went away. This mostly applied to true folded horns with no midrange drivers, like the V4B and Acoustic 360. The Sunns were not folded horns, despite what Sunn chose to call them.

Yes, they did.

I got curious about your reference, and found the thread you're referring to. It's a beautiful cab! Here's the link....

They certainly were awful, IMHO. And, just curious, what were they then?
