Some of my favorite pictures of my Ken Lawrence custom. She's my pride and joy :smug:

I get the feeling that a lot of you guys buy Customs as a sort of Mid-Life crisis... I mean, some of these basses cost a fair bit, and I doubt that the 20 or so people in here are all virtuosic bassists.

Why did you guys go custom? Do you think that you are so skilled that only a custom can serve you, or are you just looking to get something pretty before you get too old to have fun with it?

That seems a little harsh. If you can afford to do it, why not get something nice and eactly as you like it? Why do people buy upmarket cars, when a secondhand 20-year-old car would get them from A to B? Why do they select leather seats, or satellite navigation? Why do they buy a sleek mobile phone when an old brick would make calls equally well? Why get a widescreen HDTV LCD display when a 12 inch monochrome CRT would do equally well? None of those things is strictly necessary, after all millions of people have coped without owning a Mercedes or an SUV or a smartphone. And owning one of them doesn't mean you are a race driver, virtuoso telephone user or film critic!

Also, luthiers are artists (by and large), and are rarely doing it for the money, they are doing it for the love of their art and many give up more lucrative careers to pursue it. Those who can afford to buy from them are supporting them by giving them the financial means to continue developing the state of the bass art.

Vosk, since you are talking about others choices in instruments, why don't you fill out all the information on you personal profile? Let folks know what you play.

Personally, I've had some nice high end basses in my life and I currently own a nice mid priced bass. I love owning nice things I can afford. I'm not a great bassist, but I love basses, and I love owning and playing nice basses. To me that is the only justification needed to get what I want.

I will admit that there have been times when I felt funny owning nice basses since my skills are mediocre, but I am at peace with choices and I am mature enough to ignore those who might not agree with them.

+1

I often tell people "I have more money than talent". I have absolutely no need for a $5000 bass, but I can afford it and it makes me happy. Not as happy as Alizee makes me, but it's still very nice. :D  :bassist:
