Yup. I lnew you had a recent project like that. I really like that one, but then I AM a sucker for Jazzmasters and Jaguars. Sexiest guitars ever.
When I worked at Real Guitars in the early 90's a family came in with a '51 P (not many of those out there as they were only made the last few months of that year - and I think this was an Oct '51, so one of the first of the first) and it had strings somewhat similar to this. Supposedly had never been changed - certainly looked that old even then. Wish I had taken pics.

I used it for a live show for the first time last night - it definitely cuts through and has that traditional Jazz bass snarl using the center & bridge pu together. The 4th switching option (bypassing T/V pots straight to the jack) dialed correctly is a perfect "boost" mid song when required/needed. I mean 'dialed correctly' referring to leaving headroom on the V pot before going direct.
Speaking of Jazzmaster's, our guitarist Paul just was gifted a '62 Jazzmaster from his aunt as his uncle passed away recently. I'll get pics of it at our next rehearsal - it's been played.

That thing must’ve been played by the oiliest mechanic in the smokiest bars for a lifetime. Crazy how the neck is so stained but the body isn’t.

I think there's more than aging going on with that neck. I've seen nicotine-stained wood look like that, and the body finish is 'aged' but if played in smoky bars it would be yellow-brown. Then there's the chalky neck pocket w/no indication of it being on a spray-booth extension (ghost of the connection paddle) and the condition of the control harness/pots etc. How does that kind of grime/corrosion happen? Then there's the obvious DIY rout for a mud-bucker, something that players did to P's & J's in the late '60s. And lastly, the tort pg looks more like the later ('80s) version, possibly because the original one was cut-out for the mud-bucker.
