OK... 1966 P-bass (from an eBay seller in Japan) ... asking price, (wait for it) ... US $11,242.00 - can you say "out of control"?

I could be wrong but I don't think a '58 P ever came in anything but brown-burst. Possibly a rare custom colour if original. The P posted above having what appears as 'gold' over burst is most likely a relic-job for that reason. The 'gold' is likely heavily amber'd Oly wht, again - not done in the '50s other than a blond finish on the early years. I think Oly wht wasn't introduced until at least '60. The first 'gold' was done starting in the CBS years with Firmest Gold Metallic. Even Shoreline gold was more of a pewter hue. But you probably already know this! :)

Yeah, his was refinned to gold an eternity ago, but it’s still one of my faves

It looks more like the recent more muted FGM Fender re-introduced. This '70 GTO is FGM - much more gold

Pat Wilkin's did my two custom basses in FGM - years apart so slightly different but more like the GTO.

I added the last picture after you saw my last post :) You can definitely see the gold tone a bit better in that pic.

it’s definitely firemist, and the refin was done I believe in the late 60s. I should ask Nick next time I talk to him.
I played the 58 on an album I did a couple years ago and it played, sounded, and felt so good…. Just a great old bass !

'64 CAR J w/matching hs... only US $33,526.65 - was US $35,291.21 (5% off) :woot: I rented a bass just like this in about 1971 - my '68 EB3 was in the shop. It was only a few yrs old at that point and was in like-new condition. I can't recall what I paid to rent it, but it was peanuts. I took the covers off (had both) to play a HS gig and thought it was an ok bass.
