Here's the mute w/pad - great design. The bridge not so good - as indicated by the bottomed-out saddles not allowing proper intonation.

If it allowed for further saddle travel, it would be a great design.

Wow - that P's a true road warrior! Looks like a brown-burst (no red) and that tort is so pale! A pretty sweet '65 Oly white J also :thumbsup: - it appears to be a late '65 judging from the "Custom Contour" decal position moved to the upper hs.

They're given some kind of metallic coating that is gun metal grey that is then oxidized which turns it rusty orange. Somehow they stop the reaction and seal it. I had the one on the right, number 4 of 11, I just picked up the other, which is number 1. They can be beastly with both humbuckers in series but they can also be run individually and 8n parallel or single coil. So it can be a sweet jazz tone, or like a stingray, or almost anything. Most comfortable basses I've ever played.

Cool that you have #1 - I figured the method was something along those lines. Different metals can be effected with different etches which 'oxidize'/alter their metalugic properties. How fast or slowly it happens once treated depends on the strength/weakness of the etch formula and is halted at whatever stage you choose with water. Once dried off it can be sealed with any clear coating (lacquer/poly/varnish etc) in any sheen. This needs to happen or it will continue to alter.

What makes it interesting/unique is that it's like an M&M candy, with a thin shell of paint. Once chipped/worn off, there's another clear shiny finish over the wood. It's possible it was DIY sprayed over a natural w/clearcoat. But the neck wear is more extreme than I've ever seen with missing chunks of binding, craters on the neck and chipped clear creeping off the fb edges. Played hard indeed.
