Absolutely stunning!

To be honest, I much prefer the EMGs on the fretless Moduli. Gets more bite and a pronounced tone and sound out of them compared to the Barts.
My unlined Q5 has an LP in the neck and EMG in the bridge setup. Great sound.

I did some careful shopping before I ordered this. I found the EMGs produced the sound I was after and the Barts did not. I found the plastic fingerboard sounds better than the wood. The bridge pickup sound is to die for - clean and penetrating all the way down to the low B.

I'll try to take some pictures (maybe in sunlight) that do justice to the top. I've never seen such figuring in bubinga before, almost like a burl. For sure, this isn't something you'd find hanging on the wall at GC.

Now to drill on intonation above the 8th fret...

If it helps, I ordered this one through Jong Lee at Jive Sound in Alexandria VA. He underbid all the other contenders, on the second round (we got bids from a dozen dealers, took the lowest bid we got, sent it to the lowest 3 bidders and said we'd take the final low bid. Jong wasn't the lowest original bidder, but was lowest on his second offer).

It was ordered April 16th, so it arrived just less than 4 months later. This is very good time, I think. Nothing is exactly custom, but there are so many options (number of strings, fretted, fretless lined or unlined, brands of pickps, bands of EQ, wood choices for body, top and fretboard, color of finish and hardware, etc.) that you're very unlikely to find exactly what you want sitting in some store's inventory.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Modulus reserves their AAAAA tops for special orders...

I'm getting mine through Tony @ Planet Bass, simply because I was about to jump on a walnut one that someone on this board purchased.
He's been really helpful (and I gotta call the guy back about my coil tap! :eek:).
Modulus said they would get mine out in around 6 months.
Mine's going to have a 5A quilted top, and were actually looking around to make sure they got a sweet one for the finish I'm getting, velvet blue over red.
It's hot. :cool:

Modulus gave me an initial time estimate of 4-6 months.

Sounds like yours is going to be a knockout to look at (I like natural wood, but hot is hot). What mostly sold me, though, was the feel of the neck. The 6-string Modulus seems a perfect fit, endlessly comfortable for me.

I look forward to seeing what you receive. Should be dazzling.

Yeah it'll have the chechen fingerboard option too. You get a bit more warmth, but still the same fundamental and oomph of the carbon fiber.
I should get a build update this month, of the body being put together.

Slightly better pictures. Problem is, bubinga is somewhat chatoyent; you can see "into" it, and the highlights and colors change as the surface moves and the refractions change. Static pictures therefore can't do it justice, but *focused* pictures are surely a little better...

I neither specified nor expected that sort of top; I'd kind of anticipated the straight-grain bubinga top I'd seen on other instruments. My opinion of Modulus has been rising rapidly as I play this bass.

I've been comparing this to my Tobias Basic 6-string. The Tobias and Modulus necks are very similar in feel, but I slightly prefer the asymmetric Tobias. The Tobias is just over a pound heavier - these are both very heavy basses.

Probably the main difference is that the Tobias pre-amp (Bartolini) is IMO about worthless. With everything dead center in the detents, the Tobias puts out a sound the Modulus can't quite match, though it can come close. Twiddle any of the cut/boost knobs on the Tobias, and the sound gets worse. Sometimes much worse. So any EQ on the Tobias must be done at the head.

Much to the contrary, the Modulus EMG pre-amp works as one would expect, not cutting overtones or adding boominess. The result is I get a whole lot of useful sounds to work with. Perhaps the only annoyance is that turning the pickup pan in either direction from the center adds about 15db of volume! In practice, this means any change in pickup blend means a side trip to the volume knob.

Finally, the Modulus seems a bit better balanced. The Tobias has a touch more neck dive.

Now, the main problem is that Real Life keeps interrupting my playtime. Thinks like work, and sleeping.

The Tobias does not suffer this problem at all, that I can hear. Twist the pan knob back and forth, and the sound changes as you'd expect from one pickup to the other, but the volume does not change at all.

Interesting. Pretty much every bass I've owned has had this problem at least somewhat. Not a huge dropoff or gain, but at least something.

After 4 years of abuse as my main bass, and hundreds of shows....I treated my #1 to a makeover.

It was a blue sparkle originally, with routes under the humbucker, another humbucker route under the guard, and numerous dings and cracks.
