The Rapture is (to me) the ultimate jazz bass. Basssplayer mag 1st used the phrase "jazz bass on steroids" for this in its Ultimate 5 String Shootout years ago. It captures the old school vibe (pickups not in 70's Fender position) yet can slap with any other. The Bart pickups and pre give a nice range of tones-warmth to sizzle. Plus with that downsized body, you can play it effortlessly for hours.

The Thunderbolt is whole different animal. Definitely a more modern, hi-fi sounding bass. Tone goes much deepr and brighter. With the Thunderguts switch engaged, it will cut through any mix. The low mid bump gives it a lot of presence. With the maple board, it is more resonant, piano-like. I had one with a rosewood board and its tone was a bit warmer, but still very bright.

I just picked up this 1990 MVP 5. it could definitely stand to be refinished, but i'm loving it so far.

EDIT: i brought it to pedulla to have brand new electronics put in and can i just say that mid switch is AWESOME.
