Having a nice time tonight comparing my new bottle of Oban Little Bay to the classic Oban 14 and some Oban Distiller's Edition (2016). The Little Bay leans more toward the DE than the 14, and it definitely impresses. The original 14 is more crisp and clean; the Little Bay has the same basic flavor, but it is much more rich and "thick." Still super smooth, but more mouth feel, and it's just more "substantial." The DE is very similar in color to the Little Bay, but has a bit more separation to the flavors. Like the Little Bay, the DE is also more rich and full than the 14, but again, with nice, distinct flavors.

Oban 14 has a certain "palate-cleansing" quality to it, and it's my go-to scotch when I have had my fill of overly thick/rich whisky's. But if you crave the Oban flavor in a more rich, slightly darker format, both the Little Bay and the DE certainly deliver.

Hmm...I really like Oban 14 so you have me curious.

Avoid this. I bought it a few days ago and wondered why there was no age associated with it and why was it so cheap (about $40 a bottle.) I found out.

After some more quality time with my two other recent whisky acquisitions, I thought I would share some more thoughts.

The Jura Diurachs' Own 16 initially reminded me a bit of Glendronach 12, in terms of being rich, full-bodied, and a little sweet. Direct comparison definitely bears this out The Jura is a little darker, and a tad more smooth; a bit more earthy. The (Highland) Glendronach has a bit more flavor separation (and by inference, it is little less dark and a little less smooth - though that is not necessarily a bad thing; just different), and a bit of raisin aroma/flavor. Really, if you like one of these, I'd be very surprised if you hated the other.

Moving on to the Glenfiddich Project XX, we are again in the same overall wheelhouse of rich/full/kinda sweet. The XX has more of a vanilla thing going on, for sure, with some apple/pear notes. The smoothness is on a par with the Jura, though with a bit more definition to the nose/taste/finish. I must say, most of the Glenfiddich variants I have tried have been pretty good (and this coming from a mostly Islay guy), and this one may be my favorite so far.

All three of these are quite nice, I must say. :thumbsup:

Have to admit to preferring the Diurachs Own to my Glendronach but that's just personal preference. Might have to try that comparison again. As if i need an excuse :)
Project XX sounds really interesting. Will have a look for that one but don't recall ever seeing that over here.
Really good review on them.

Sherry Oak Cask looks a lot richer in colour. That's the one on their website but found this fine oak cask 18 yr old on line at £189.

However, if you look at their website, that and the 30 are literally the only ones the Sherry and Fine Oaks have in common. LOL!

5 large for a bottle of booze? Sorry, but no thanks. :)

Its more than i would pay for either to be honest.
I'm not that much of an expert to fully appreciate the £179 one either. I'll stick to my Diurachs Own and gonna look out for the Project XX when i'm up North in May for a wee weeks holiday at Loch Ness. Oot there huntin fur Nessie by jings crivvens help ma boab. :D You need a wee warm up when you come of the Loch.
This will be my local bar at night. Been going here since 1993 every year.
