I'll stick to my Diurachs Own and gonna look out for the Project XX when i'm up North in May for a wee weeks holiday at Loch Ness. Oot there huntin fur Nessie by jings crivvens help ma boab. :D You need a wee warm up when you come of the Loch.

Okay, tonight's cage match pits the Glenfiddich Project XX (#02) against Macallan Elegancia 12 (aged in sherry oak casks). You guys had me thinking about Macs, and the Elegancia 12 is my only Macallan in the house, currently (I like it a lot, actually). I had a 15 Fine Oak, but I think Vic helped me kill that one at last Summer NAMM. My last 18 didn't last too long (I should have stocked up back when it wasn't so expensive).

Once again, the matchup is surprisingly close. It may be that I normally tend to move on to an extremely different whisky when I feel the need to move on a bit. For instance, after turning to my go-to Lagavulin 16 for a while, I'll make a major switch to something like Oban 14, or something similarly far away from Lagavulin. With these last several comparisons, the whisky's have shared a lot of common characteristics. In truth, some of them have been a lot closer comparisons than I had expected. Such is the case tonight.

The Elegancia definitely shows its sherry oak cask aging in a very nice way. In truth, that's probably its strongest trait. The XX is the more earthy/nutty of the two, and it has that vanilla thing going on that I mentioned before. These two whisky's have very similar overall fullness, smoothness, and quality of finish (the flavors are different, but the length and "cleanliness" of the finish is quite similar between the two).

This one is absolutely a toss-up for me in terms of preference. Not really having much in the way of expectations for the Glenfiddich XX #02, I have to say, it has my attention!

I did a Diurach's Own vs XX the other night and my impression is the DO is slightly sweeter/fuller/richer/warmer, whereas the XX is clearer/brighter/open, but both have really good complexity. Maybe a tip to the DO for a slight bit more going on. Do I have a fave? No. They're different enough from each other it's gonna' depend entirely on what I'm in the mood for.

Oh, and Tom, I still have some 18. I'll try to make sure you get some before it's gone. :)

I'd be happy to come over and make sure its the genuine whisky. Obviously i would need to sample from the bottom and that means drinking it all. Bit of a trek tho. :laugh:

LOL! well, truth told, it's been a while since i've had a nice sip, maybe months... i don't do this very often. and it literally took me like almost an hour to finish one shot. don't want you to get the wrong idea. we're not drunks like those bleeding Scots! lmao (jk!!!) cheers, mate.

LOL! Yeah, it's mostly just weekends for me, but I've had a long string of working 13-15 hour days, and I'm usually pretty wound-up and still thinking about way too much stuff to fall asleep, so it definitely helps to chill out a bit with a nice dram.

Thought maybe you were trying to steal our reputation there guys.
Wee dram after a long hard days work always helps to relieve the stresses of work. Just don't do that too often. That's how addiction starts. In moderation is my way except when i'm out on the piss at a party and then its acceptable to have a good few nips to keep the cold weather at bay. :hyper:
That's me jumping up and down at the bar or maybe just to stay warm :laugh:
You've kind of put me in the mood for a wee Diurachs tonight. You guys are a bad influence on me.
