Single Malt Scotch!

Ziltoid, have you picked up any whisky literature?

If you are looking for new things to try, there are a number of Whisky books out there (companion, bible, yearbook, guide) which would give you a hoard of information to pour over :)

I have not, a few friends of mine swear by whisky bible, they have the app I think. I assume some books are better than others, which one would you suggest?

Michael Jackson has a number of great books out there (on pretty much anything alcohol, we used to have a few of his beer guides). We used to have a copy of his Whisky Companion in the bar I worked at, but there are a couple newer ones out now. The Whisky Bible is also a well known one and very respected one, didn't know they had an app, going to have a look into that!

There are also the yearbook and other guides. To be honest, I'd have a look and compare the reviews to see which one is worth going for. The yearly ones/multiple edition ones tend to be on the better side and obviously more up to date.

Because of this thread I feel like I need to get by the liquor store and check out some new stuff. I always buy lottery tickets when I go to the liquor store, if I don't win, at least I got a new bottle.

I joined the Ardbeg fan club and got some pretty cool stuff, including a fake tattoo. Bitchin! They sent me stuff all the way from Scotland.

Snow on the mountain this week, time to buy a new flask for snowboarding season.

Received this a few days ago :)

It's nice, he's a bit smooth on the scores so a few points of difference means something. His description of the scotchs I had is spot on in most case but you can definitely tell this guy has superman taste buds . All in all it was a 10$ well spent, it will help me avoid crappy bottles and find new ones I never heard of before. :)

Celebratory scotch bottle! I grabbed this one, it's inexpensive yet Murray was fan of it (96 out of 100). Celebratory as I had a meeting today with a professor, turns out he wants to be my thesis adviser for my master AND give me some part time contracts as a research assistant. You could tell he was excited to have a student interested in his specific field and that he really liked my "research proposal". Awesome day.

Nice one (on both the malt and the masters/assistant positions!)

It's one of the more common malts, but that is by no means a bad thing!

I also get what you are saying about the ratings all being huddled together, I think that part is fairly common. If someone made a consistently bad single malt, they probably wouldn't last all that long. The rest of it is in the tasting and personal preference!

'Just found this thread. GREAT!
'Love me some Islay Single Malts!
Lagavulin 16 is my fav, as well! 'Good to see my fellow bass players agree!
I also like Laphroaig 10 ('Will have to try the "Quarter Cask"). Laphroaig definitely should be the LAST scotch drank for the evening....
I like Caol Ila, Talisker, and Bowmore ('Will have to try the "Darkest").
But Lagavulin is something else....liquid gold....gorgeous color, aroma, and TASTE!
Anyone have a recommendation for something equaling my Lagavulin?
