glenfiddich 15 will probably be my next foray

I don't know if they sell them in the US, but Glenfiddich sell 3x5cl and 3x20cl packs, containing the 12, 15 and 18 year olds. Nice for having a wee sample, especially seeing that they go out of their way to make them taste as different from one another as possible.

Good suggestions. Balvennie Double Wood is my go-to "intro" scotch, though the Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or which I recently picked up would do the trick nicely, as well. Same for Oban 14.

I had the 3x5cl Glenfiddich set as a Christmas present a few years back - a good way of sampling. I do like miniatures as a way of avoiding a costly mistake.

When my parents lived in Colchester I popped into Invalid Link Removed a couple of times - their selection is insane, both distillery and special bottlings.

I've got my couple of recent Highland Park miniatures at home waiting for a special occasion. Like maybe Friday night.

the other problem is that they're expensive!

i wish miniature bottles of quality scotch were regularly available. the best i've found locally is one store with minis of macallan 18, johnny black, glenlivet 12.

that way i'd be able to taste things without finding a bar that has it, or investing in a full bottle.

Dalwhinnie is the suggestion I always use because that was my intro! Easy first single malt to enjoy.

All this talk of Islay has got me on the Bowmore Legend tonight. Less peat and salt than the 'big three' (which I discovered are all on the south of the island pretty much within walking distance of each other). But it'd make a good 'gateway' malt for someone wanting to ease into the bolder Islay whiskies.

Mentioned the idea of an Islay tour to the wife. Guess what she'd been looking into just yesterday? Funds and childcare permitting, it's on for 2015.

If you're ever in Tokyo there's a place in the underground area where you can test a wide variety of scotches, and they also have a much greater variety than most any shop I've ever been in.

All this talk of Islay has got me on the Bowmore Legend tonight. Bowmore Legend has been on my radar for a while now. I like the 12, but not so much the 18 and am tempted every time I see a bottle of it in the store.

The difference in taste between the 12 and 15 is huge, it's not even fair to compare them. I find the 12 to be meh but I really like the 15.

Taken in the proper amounts there can be no better band-aid than scotch.

Due to the smaller size, they are great for buying online.

I've even seen some places that make their own miniatures if the distillery doesn't bottle their own.

They do exist, but I don't know where you could find them. My buddy brought back miniatures of every cool distillery he went to when he visited Scotland -Talisker, Laphroaig, Dalwhinnie, Oban, etc.. So, they do make them, but availability is the problem.

All in all, if I was told I could only ever drink one whisky for the rest of my days, it would be Lagavulin 16.

I'd have to go Talisker 18, but, I do believe you have named my strong second choice.
