I hope not! I just got a first generation ash M7 yesterday. Very pleased after I put on new strings and adjusted the truss rod.

Looking at a 1st gen M7 4 string. Anything I need to know? Is it worth getting or should I pony up for gen 2?
Some of the sound samples on YouTube sound a little dark.
I’ve been looking at some active modern basses lately to cover/create some hip hop. But would also like to gig this as a Swiss army style bass. The options are very L-2000ish without the MFD p/ups.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I have a Gen 1 M7 and I’m THRILLED with it! Definitely not dark sounding. The EQ and tonal options are incredibly good and make for a “Swiss Army” bass in a major way. I stumbled into mine a few weeks ago used, but flawless, for half the price of a new Gen 2 so it was a slam dunk no brainer for me. If I paid full price I’d still be happy with it to be honest. A tremendous bass in every way.

I currently play a Jazz bass width neck. The M7 seems to have a 1 1/2" nut but seems slimmer throughout. Is it to crowded, or is the spacing ok?
Looking to get some modern tones for Hip Hop, R&B but would like to be able to pull off other genre's as well. Think those tones are in there?

Not crowded really. A teeny bit of a crowded feeling but I got used to it very quickly (and I’m hyper sensitive to stuff like that). Really similar to some Jazz basses I’ve owned actually.
You will TOTALLY be able to get Hip Hop or R&B tones and lots others. That preamp easily dishes out a massive variety of USEABLE tones, not just extremes.

Grabbed this beauty today and I'm back to the M series. Used to have a M3 4 strings, and really miss it; but this one is an amazing instrument. Went originally for a V5 5 strings, but played this one and I just fall in love...
Can I ask if the back has a tummy cut or if it's more slab body style? Looks like a small body might not need a tummy cut.

@dabbler I use D'Addario EXL170-5SL and they feel and sound perfect on my M7. However I'm not sure, if you could use the usual long scale version due to the increased scale length.

I have a question to the M7 owners out there myself: If you're playing in passive mode and decreasing the volume, does your M7 hum? Everything is fine on full volume or in active mode with reduced volume, but in passive mode, my M7 starts to hum when decreasing the volume, which is quite annoying. Do I have to live with it or do known fixes exist?

Changes I personally wish Sire would make to the M7:
- Deeper bottom cutaway all the way to the 24th fret
- No exposed pole pieces (so ugly, especially on the 6 string.. there are 48 of them!)
- 17mm string spacing
- 34" scale length 5 string
- Longer upper horn to the 12th fret instead of 13th

Except for the bottom cutaway, because I don't need to go past the 19th fret.
I'm still undecided whether I like the rolled fretboard edges or not...
Oh and I would like a battery cover without screws and an easy trussrod access at the body end of the fretboard.
