So, Ariel Castro is dead...

His crimes were about control, and he continued to accomplish that by killing himself to remove the victims sense of justice. They can no longer back in the glory that he is getting his.

AFA wasting tax dollars to house him - I think money should be a non issue. It costs far more in court costs to put someone to death than to house them for 40 years. The punishment IMO is about society's demand for retribution and it's significance to the people as a whole - money is secondary. That's why we have the death penalty despite it's higher costs.
Very well put. BTW. Love that avatar.

I am torn on should he have suffered for years or was this just a DIY execution? Certainly was a time and money saver.

Religious folks oppose it, saying 'don't play God.' Until it's them. Then they're suddenly special.
Not all religious folk. I'm religious folk (I know, really?, you're one agro m/f Ed). Anyway, our argument FOR rests on these thoughts:
a.People in extreme, constant pain can become mentally ill just from the pain.
b.They are deathly ill in any event.
c. God will forgive them based on either "A" or "B" - if the person is a religious folk themselves I would assume they make a final plea to the Almighty to forgive them for hitting the switch.

I was widowed about 11 years ago, wife had a brain tumor. Sure wasn't great having her die in my arms with no idea who I even was. My vote is for suicide being rational based on circumstances. It's lose-lose on your own terms.

Heartless, cruel, sociopathic people are very often cowards deep down.

One only need look at the Nazis & how they scattered like cowards when they lost the war. Still others took cyanide to avoid prosecution.

I'm not surprised at all by what Castro's done.

You're sinking on a boat, alone, a thousand miles from land, in shark infested waters. You have no food, no water, no liferaft and all your comms are down.

There is, however, a pistol with one bullet.

I think I'd probably make the most rational decision of my life at that point.

Or you're facing spending the rest of your life branded as a chomo in a sector of society where such people are preferred dead and your peers are skilled at making that the case.

Wait, hold up. A person would go out in a boat, a thousand miles from land in shark infested waters, all alone with no food water or a liferaft yet he remembered to bring a gun and a bullet? Suicide was already on this idiot's mind. :D

Could be his food, water and rescue supplies were damaged in the event that caused the boat to start sinking, but the gun was holstered by his shoulder.

Haha good point. But you know what I mean :)

Dont give in so easily!

Never give up! Never surrender!

i haven't read the whole thread, but...

am i the only person who doesn't believe it was suicide?!! prison has their own form of justice system. (prison) guards have sanctioned murders on fools like Castro since the beginning! the art is in the cover-up!:ninja:

Put bullet in pistol.

Shoot shark.

Eat it.

Drink its blood.

Live another day.

Use it's tail for a paddle.

Use it's skin to make a sail.

Come on man, don't give up so easy. :)

I take a religious view of it as well and I just don't see any time where it's ok, or rational.

Could be debated I suppose.

Taking the life you were blessed with is a bad sin, yet sins are forgiven? Do you have time to repent during that split second the bullet is between the gun and your head? You've commited the act but haven't died yet. What if you do it by hanging but then you change your mind and can't get the rope off?

Touchy stuff, I figure it's best to just keep living and deal with whatever your problem is.

I'm not Catholic but didn't they recently change their position on this, saying suicide was dying from an illness, that being a mental illness?

I imagine some ways of dying are extremely painful, but when you compare it to eternity, it still isn't very long.

IMO religion doesn't actually care about the life; frowning on suicide keeps one more seat in the pews titheing their life away while the sermons give them a hope that keeps them coming back. Remove money from religion and / or politics and I might consider taking them seriously.

A distinct possibility.

Either way, I'm sure he was faced with a choice: Die at the sadistic hands of fellow inmates, or do the job himself.

OK we've had our fun with religion posts. Lets leave this dead horse alone now

That's what I've been thinking too. The only thing is, I would imagine the guards and/or inmates wanting to let this guy languish in prison for a while before taking him out

I doubt there would be any argument against this guy being one more sick SOB.

I also doubt there would be any argument against this guy ever giving up his all consuming desire for control short of being forced or upon his demise.

Once forced to give up his fetish for control he had nothing left to live for so why bother?

As has been pointed out, he controlled the situation all the way down to denying society the satisfaction of watching him squirm and denying his victims the satisfaction their suffering was properly avenged by our justice system.

In the end he wins and we lose. Well some of us do. I for one don't care about the motivation behind his perversion or suicide. I'm just happy he's gone and (hopefully) soon forgotten.

Prisons always label any death that happens there a suicice, whether it really was or not.

I see a LOT of presumptuous posts that these girls, & their families have somehow been short changed by his dying.

Of course none of us could possibly know what they're thinking right now w/o actually hearing it from them directly, we can attempt to pretend to be in their shoes.

However, when I do this I'm not left feeling shortchanged at all, but rather a little relieved.
I can't imagine these people thought for a minute this guy deserved to spend his days out, in protective custody, in a protected housing unit where the odds of him ever being harmed was highly unlikely. Possible, but not likely.

The guy would have been very protected, treated very humanly, and given plenty of time to read, write, and still live a better life than they themselves were afforded.
He'd certainly have eaten well, and slept well, and would have had the luxury of developing pen pals, relationships, and even a wife if he so decided in time.

If I had the option of my victimizer living a life in prison, or dying instantly, I'd choose death, and feel every bit of good about it.

They no longer have to wonder of he is suffering, or thriving in there. They no longer have to fear that he'd be released through some glitch in the system, or loophole.
No fear of a prison break.
Nothing.
He's gone for good, what could possibly give a victim more unchangeable peace than the ultimate eradication of concern?

His living or dying doesn't unkidnap or unrape anyone. The women get nothing back from his continued or discontinued being other than illogical presumptions of this "justice" thang.
