My friend, you are a true team player. Or a control freak with tendencies toward enabling... take your pick.

I play in a big-band jazz band where one of the substitute trombone players carries a vocal mike in his gig bag, standard. We'll let just about anyone in our band sing, but he never does. I can only assume there's some gig where he's mic'd. There's probably a decent reason for it, but I find that pretty odd, overall.

aside from the million cables to patch my rack together i carry extra mic cables, 1/4 inch cables, allen wrench set. large and small screw driver set, soldering gun, solder, two franken-basses, even have an extra varitone, in case for some reason I were in diar straits, two full sets of strings(don't need/no slap) but hey, 1/2 a dozen nine volt batteries, extra guitar strap, picks(don't use'em) but you know guitards always bringin' a knife to a gun-fight, hell I even have a drum key, never hurts to plan ahead for everyone, I don't pull everything out of the van, but you get mad-props when you actually have a drum-key or something totally unrelated to you.

Just a bass. All other essential are packed into one of two backpacks I take.

- Spare set of strings, or at least the cover from the last pack, so I'll remember what I use on *this* bass ...
- extra strap (my main strap is in a box with a bunch of cables and other stuff)
- tuner
- 2 x 1/4" to 1/4" cables, one about 6", one about 2 ft.
- Ace bandage from the time period during which I was fighting tendinitis in my elbow, hot pink because it was the only color in stock at Walgreen's at 1a on a Sunday. Needless to say, I don't actually use it much when I'm playing. It fills a handy space in the accessory compartment though, and keeps everything else from sliding around.
- Small, self-made toolkit in a toiletry-pouch that happened to be a perfect size to fit in the accessory compartment. Toolkit includes a variable-bit screwdriver, a couple of pairs of small wire clippers, string winder, emery boards, hex-wrench set, and some other random stuff.
- program from a musical I played for 6 years ago
- Small bag of Starbucks coffee that a friend gave me at a gig about two years ago. I'm guessing it's not any good anymore, but it makes my case smell nice.

There are probably some other odds & ends, I'm doing this from memory. Also have a box that holds most of my cables, bass stand, extension cord, spare batteries, wireless rig, and a host of other odds and ends.

Much of what others have mentioned is in my bass bag, such as:

What stands out in my bag is the Zoom H2. I only recently got it, but I now find it indispensable. I throw it on a mic stand, hit record, and if anything good (or bad) happens during a gig or rehearsal, I can scrutinize it later. I play with an older guitarist who knows hundreds of songs and just starts playing them, with little intro or heads up. This is helping me keep them straight.

The rest of my junk is either in my gigbag(spare cable, lyric sheets, microphone and cable, batteries, flashlight, spare strings) or in a rolling case (bass stand, mic stand, music stand, folding chair, wireless gear). Don't always use the wireless stuff, but the rest is of much help.
