Someone cracked the Animato

Boards have arrived and they work. Huzzah! Just over an hour to wire up the test board to see if the layout works. Biggest relief!

The one thing I realised is that the MPSA13 I had marked down (even marked wrong orientation! ARGH) instead of the pair creates too much of a fuzz sound on the input. I replaced it with a BC549C and my word, it sounds as good as the silicon pair and about as good as I can get with one silicon transistor. Doesn't have that tiny bit of warmth that the germanium pair offers but for all intents and purposes, you'll be very hard pressed to hear a difference. I have some MPSA18's on order but I feel the BC549 by itself is doing it a lot of justice. Everything else I tried made it sound too dark or too gutless. Fussy part of the circuit.

Might make the bitmap today while those last parts are on order :O

EDIT: Not wiring this up since this was my test board but here's a test fit of the components.

Okay, so long story short. We've had horrific conditions here for the past few days. My shop got struck by lightning and my university is closed so in a roundabout way, I've had more time to work on the pedals. Have the guts of about 14 done. They take just a hair more than an hour to build. Not sure if that is fast or slow, just how I get them done I guess. Still no ETA on enclosures. Granted, there is a 3-4 week lead time on them so it's probably pushing that.

I've sent the PCB's out to those that have ordered. I will explain that there may be delays due to the weather here. It's nowhere near as windy now but we are still having isolated storms and a lot of infrastructure is still unusable.

Yep, everyone I know is accounted for. A lot of my friends still don't have access to power and might not for up to two weeks at this rate. Think something like 200,000 homes are still out and the storms pretty much ended last night. We have sunlight now. So many fallen trees though, which is bizarre because I think that's the first proper storm I've ever encountered in my life.

My turn in the barrel was in 2004. We got hit by three out of the four major hurricanes that hit Florida in rapid succession, lost power for a total of 8 days, got our roof condemned, and narrowly missed a tree falling on our house. Not fun driving around hoping to find something simple like ice. Taught me what big giant crying wussies we all are with our power and our gadgets. I'm still a big giant crying wussy but at least I realize it now.

Clearly not fun at all. I wouldn't like to imagine 8 days out plus dealing with damage like that. Just the stress of restocking our entire shop was enough for me. Took us about 6 hours and cost a bit to replenish and prep all cold stock. Not heaps, hopefully covered by insurance but considering my weekday employee and myself did all that, pretty happy to be open again. Also glad today is *kind of* a public holiday where I don't need to open until the early afternoon :D

jwr, You can PM me if you want a PCB or two. It'll be the last PCB's I sell for a while.

I've got 20 boards done and still no sign of the enclosures. Don't think I can work on any more this weekend but if all goes to plan, I could have every board done by the end of next week. Then begins the job of assembling. Yay! Got the voskhod made and it sounds like Big Muff. :D

Quick question for Adam or John. Earlier in the thread you guys were having this discussion:

"John, I'm going to request something stupid. The 22uF capacitor... is there any chance you can change it to a 2.2uF? It *may* be what is allowing so much bass through."

I think I would like to do a switch and put a 22uf and a 2.2uf since I really liked the lows in John's first clip but also want to have a more faithful sound available.
Could you please tell me which capacitor that was? It would be most helpful if Adam could tell me the component number it is on the pcbs as I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I looked at the schematic and either I just can't see it on my phone or am just missing it.
Thanks,
Joe

i'm using the 2.2uf in them so that they sound like stock units.

Thanks Jimmy. Admittedly those two on the right are just spray paint jobs with a clear decal quickly thrown on. The photo makes them look much nicer than they actually are but for illustrative purposes they work design wise. The identity thing is what I wanted to achieve.

Can I suggest, that you stick with the yellow / Orange colour highlight on all you pedals. You've struck gold there on that design and I would stick with that. the only variation needed is that name. I love the font, and everything else.

I only had different colours to make them easier to distinguish on a board but I will take that suggestion on board. :)

Just a note for those that have ordered. Haven't been home to update the site but the pedals should be shipping out either this coming Friday or the Monday after. The poor post office isn't going to know what to hit them. :P

Sounds good. Can't wait to receive mine!

That's what makes the email I sent even worse. The enclosures I ordered were all the wrong size so there is a delay until I can get that sorted. I checked through absolutely everything and there is no error on my half, the receipts are even signed off three times with the correct size written down. I'll be giving them a call as soon as I can to fix it. First time I've had to make an international call and it's not going to be a good one. :(

Yeah, I am still here. I am still waiting on the cases to be completed for the animated. I haven't received any shipping confirmation yet so no idea when they will be done. Granted, they normally take 7-10 days to make and it is nearing the end of that now so I expect that soon.

The bitmap needs another board design, but only the layout just to help it fit in a bit more and snug. Also strangely having issues trying to find the PCB mount switch for the filter cap, which might require a bit more time. I won't be building these either until I can secure another case manufacture method that is a bit more reliable. Sadly, time isn't on my side with studies at the moment to be searching and asking around.

I've just been working on a reverb pedal and rack unit during this time since I can take the board with me, plug headphones in and test new ideas.

So basically, it's a bit bleh at the moment. I have all the animated boards done ready to be wired into place. Really frustrating about the oversized cases but it happens :(
