Someone cracked the Animato

Yeah. It didn't quite have the attack but it sort of kept the lows. Gain for weeks though.

I'm not sure if it's a transistor thing or I stuffed up somewhere but I'm thinking more the latter so I'll have to trace all the values again.

Maybe the thread should then be renamed to: "Somebody Cracked AND fixed the Animato" :)

yeah, i'd confirm it. I just need to put the three 10uf caps back in it now and box it up.
it seems to have plenty of low end so I don't think it'll require a blender, but it's late and I can't crank it up to test it at gig volume right now.
Yeah, I was actually surprised by mine having a bit of low end too. Did yours have a really sharp sounding attack though? That's kind of the main characteristic of it.

It's like watching the movie "Primer", all this technical talk shouldn't be that interesting but it's so suspenseful...
Haha, yeah. :p I just really want to get one sounding as similar to the original as possible. Doing it on a breadboard is all fine and what not but what I have on there right now isn't exactly it. Close, but it doesn't have the attack. :(

yes, it has a sharp sounding attack.
after experimenting with various germanium transistors. I've found that swapping out the first NPN ge tranny makes the most difference.
some are smoother and others are more gritty and gated. I prefer the smoother ones.

i've also tried silicons for the first two, and while it works, it sounds A LOT better with the germs.
 
Very nice John! I love hearing the little flick of the switch and not much virtually happening. Shouldn't be happy about something have little effect but that's the case. How do you feel about its sound? I think it sounds too deep in comparison but it's still good. I could see that working better with guitars/bass on its own now.

I've got a few more transistors to sub in to see if I can get a silicon pair sound close enough to it until my germs arrive. I'm very happy with the gain, actually found it sustains longer with the 2N3904's in place of the C2240's but I can't settle on a first pairing that gets that distinct attack required. If the pairings don't work, I'll look at the caps but I can't see any errors with them but I could well be wrong.

I also looked up the 10uF capacitor polarity. Turns out the ones that are used are NON-polarised.

John, I'm going to request something stupid. The 22uF capacitor... is there any chance you can change it to a 2.2uF? It *may* be what is allowing so much bass through. I have a gut feeling I wrote the value down wrong because it was the only capacitor I couldn't identify properly. A test in LTspice shows a dramatic difference in bass frequencies and that could be it.

Ah, AH. Did you ever dime the tone control in that clip or put it at half way? Also, did you use a linear or audio pot for the tone? I accidentally put audio in the schematic when it should be linear (d'oh!)
I used a linear.
and i never dimed the tone pot in that clip.
