Songs requested with wrong title

Last Saturday night I had a requester approach the stage and ask me if we knew "that one song about the wine..." The first one I thought of was "Days Of Wine And Roses", but that wasn't it. "Wine Spo-De-O-Dee"? That wasn't it either. "Wine Do Yer Stuff"? Nope. The guy said "It was special wine, that he was saving..." Special wine? Uhm, there must be hundreds of songs about wine, buddy! Do you know who sang it? Nope. We continued to brainstorm, until...

It finally occurred to me that he meant "Dust On The Bottle" by David Lee Murphy, a #1 hit in 1995. Eureka! (We don't play it.)

I was listening to the radio a while back and a listener requested the song "With This Ring" since he had just proposed to his girlfriend. The DJ said how great that was and he'd be glad to play it for them.

Then he proceeded to play "This Diamond Ring" by Gerry Lewis and The Playboys which is just about as lyrically opposite as you can get.

Was a tool.

I have a messed up story about that. I was doing a gig with a temporary band that I've joined where we do cover songs. during the middle of our set, someone requested paranoid. the lead singer/guitarist and I assumed that person requested paranoid by black sabbath. but before we play something, the same person was saying paranoid by green day. for a moment, the lead singer/guitarist and I had no Idea what person is talking about. but then the lead singer/guitarist realized that the person who requested paranoid must of meant basket case by green day. so he said "I think you mean basket case by green day". that person who requested the song felt stupid and was all like "oh yeah...basket case...that's the one...sorry". so after that, we played basket case by green day.

"can you play 'Blue Orange'"
I was really stumped - and being in the DC area I was thinking the song had something to do with a train (There are the Blue and Orange lines on the DC metrotrail)

Then he tried to help me out - "ya know - the CSI song"
Now I'd totally lost it (I don't watch much TV).

Later figured out the song he meant was "Who Are You" by The Who.

Many years ago we had a singer who insisted on starting up with " Gonna tell Aunt Mary 'bout Uncle Ron......" Probably nobody ever noticed. Also, someone once insisted to Paul McCartney the the line in Strawberrry Fields was "living is easy with nice clothes"
