Songs that instantly make you cry

Ya, got a song...a specific part of the song too...."...of the wives and the sons and the daughters" of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. Not sure really why it gets me though. I mean, I've always loved the big lakers, but not THAT much.

Tool's "10,000 Days (Wings pt.2)" gets me every time.

It is about Maynard's mother, but it could just as easily have been about my mother. There are a ton of similarities between his mother's story and my mother's story. In fact, if the lyrics "Judith Marie, unconditional one" were changed to "Helen Mary, unconditional one", it would totally fit my mother. My mother died shortly after that album was released. I love that album, and I listen to it a lot, but I don't think there has been a single time I've heard that song that I don't turn into a blubbering pile of jelly for at least a few minutes.

Most of Blue October's stuff from back before they were somewhat famous gets me.

Their lead singer Justin Furstenfeld makes no secret of his battles with various mental illnesses and going from working in a psych ward to being a patient in one. The guy sings what he knows about and as someone who has battled depression over half my life, his lyrics hit very close to home with me.

Especially:

For my Brother
Black Orchid
The Answer
Schizophrenia

"Crying" by Roy Orbison has to be the most beautiful song about heartbreak and dispair. A close second is "Long Long Time" by Linda Ronstadt.

On a separate note, I feel that "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack is the most beautiful love song ever recorded. YMMV. I played that on URB for a wedding with a pianist and a cellist with my wife singing. My heart was pounding in my chest by the time we were done. We kicked ASS!

BTW, that's Ron Carter on Bass and Cello on that tune.

Crying

Long, Long Time

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Hear N' Aid-"Starz"
The Who-"Baba O'Reily"(reminds me of a drummer I used to jam with that is sadly no longer with us)
Peter Criss-"I Can't Stop The Rain"
Rush-the entire "Hold Your Fire" album. Not necessarily sad tears, but this album holds a very special place in my heart and stirs a ton of emotion every time I listen to it.
