American Pie - I thought it was just a simple folk rock tune, but it has great playing all around, and a happening and melodic bass line. You actually can hear it even better in the Weird Al parody. Trust me, give it a listen.

Freebird - every thing I've seen a cover band do it, the bassist was just pounding roots, but the original line is a lot more.

Oddly enough, I really like the line to YMCA...although I'll probably get a lot of flack for that! Regarding Freebird...Skynyrd has A LOT of great bass lines. Regardless of the song, I find that the bass really drives everything, and does it well!

Back in the 1960s/1970s there was a lot of great, fluid, moving bass lines. Nowadays (for a couple of decades, at least, now) it seems to be mostly about hanging on the root of the chord. How boring, for the most part.

I'm primarily a hired gun, so I get some interesting set lists from time to time that force me to go back to the original recordings to make my own charts. A couple of tunes that I've played in the past year that fit this criteria:

- "Help Me" – Joni Mitchell (1974)
- "December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" – The Four Seasons (1975)
- "You're The One That I Want" – Grease Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1978)

I just tried sight reading Free Bird on Songsterr. Yeah, I failed. I didn't think it would be that hard.
