source audio c4

it tracks way better than the EHX Bass Mono Synth.
Thanks for that bit of info. I'd been idly considering one of those as another potential source of synth sounds, and now I can take it off the GAS list :)

Obviously going to be a very steep learning curve, though. So far I can’t even figure out how to save changes other than the patch name and description. :) Time to read.
There's quite a learning curve, but it's well worth it.

There's also a huge library of presets to work your way through, even without understanding the synth controls. Our own @Quatschmacher has contributed quite a few great sounds to it.

Hey all,

I'm experiencing a new challenge with the C4/Desktop editor. The pedal is recognized but when I try to look at my presets, they pop up in the right side window for a moment and then disappear. I've upgrade the app and the pedal firmware. I'm able to do everything else fine afaict. Anyone else seen this? Thanks!

Disconnect any other usb devices that you don’t need to run the editor, also if your using a usb hub, connect directly to your computer.

I had the C4 boxed up and refund return slip agreed with the shop all ready to go to the post office when it's partial replacement (Fwonkbeta envelope filter) arrived....after a day of testing that I unboxed the C4 again to compare and have had a change of heart! The Fwonkbeta is being returned and the C4 is staying, the C4 can get close to that or the M82, and I really Like Quatschmacher's Upright Bass preset. I can't quite get the C4 to do an Octaver as good as my Octamizer so that will be staying for the time being.

I'll just have to get into a different mindset of making adjustments via Laptop/Phone and saving a lot of presets. At a minimum, a DMC micro (or equivalent) is on my shopping list, as is somethign like the EHX CTRL.

........this does mean that my envelope filter and Octaver 'replacement' has only actually replaced my envelope filter on my pedalboard, and will cost and take up the space of two or three envelope filters by the time I've bought additional hardware controls. Probably worth it though.

I understand where you're coming from on this. I find that it can be hours of dialing in sounds, then trying them live, then readjusting and re-trying live etc. And yes, that often felt like a time sink to me.

But at the same time this is what the options looked like for me:

A) Use the C4 program a handful of pretty divergent filter patches for different songs and be able to switch on the fly to any of them.

or

B) Have 3 or more envelope filters on my board, and a handful of other 'support pedals' in different configurations for tones I wanted.

Similar but to a lesser extent was the After Shock, where I might want something from the most minimal sense of texture to Fuzz, double fuzz, gated fuzz, etc.

In the end a pedal board is only as big as it is and I didn't really have the want to carry 3 or 4 envelope filters and/or 3 or 4 types of gain/distortion then also dance to get them all layered in correctly. Similarly, I use a Strymon Timeline instead of 6 different delays. Once I got a decent programable bypass looping unit that integrated MIDI, it became much easier on stage and I could fuss with the fine-adjustment at home in my music room.

There IS some pleasure in having individual old-style discrete effects pedals and I have a board like that too...but depending on the stage setting it's just more important to have a fast, consistent easy solution some times.

My long term goal is to have the Soleman, a Tuner and Radial Bassbone at my feet and all the EFX in the backline somewhere... this was a part of my settling in on Source Audio and also the Future Impact. Only non-midi item remaining is an MXR M87 comp... if the new Multiband gizmo does a good comp ... the MXR might become part of my guitar rig or more likely an item in the GFS here.

Funny you should say that: my C4 is in the FX loop on my Bassbone OD.

I thought that setup had a serious grounding problem at one point, but it turned out to be with my laptop and external monitor - unplug the USB cable and the noise goes away.

Has anyone successfully used an EHX CNTL Knob pedal in place of an expression pedal? I just got one as it seemed the cheapest option to assign 2x additional controls.

I have the cables as suggested by Source Audio ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) "1/4" TRS to female RCA cable, an 1/8" TRS to male RCA cable....Connect the 1/4" TRS into your pedal's expression out, and the 1/8" TRS into your One Series pedal's Control Input port. Then, connect the male to female RCA cables, but swap the reds and whites, effectively flipping the tip and ring connectors."

And via Neuro I've assigned the control source for X and Y, assigned the control options, mucked about changing min and max %, set the routing options, tried to calibrate automatically and also set a lot of different values myself- but the only think that happens is when clicked on the CNTL 'EXP 1' setting the Input X jumps about a bit, so there is some signal going through but not in a calibrated way and nothing for EXP 2 - Input Y.

Is this an issue with my Neuro settings, the CNTL, or I'm guessing it's the cables (is the Source Audio site wrong - do I need TRRS going into the C4)?

The X and Y as these are for controllers that send two values such as the hot hand. Try using the “hub/external MIDI” option.

^^
I don't think the CNTL will play nicely with the C4 which is a shame. Mucking about a lot more to get it calibrated it moves one C4 parameter as it's turned up but then the C4 doesn't read it as staying at the set position - it gradually resets back to zero once you stop turning.

fwiw, this didn't help on my windows machine. i was able to get it working on my MacBook, but...encountered another weird bug. My Library contains only a few of the patches I've burned there when I view it on my Mac, but is full on my iOS app and windows machine.

I don’t think you need the RCA setup, as the ehx appears to have polarity switch on it. Use the control X, that is for expression, Y is for the second axis on the hot hand, and hub is when connected to hub for expression on the trs jack.

Are you using the latest version of the desktop editor?

Thanks, yes - I tried switching the RCA cables and trying either way with the CTRL polarity switch, it sort of works with the X control but only tracks as the CTRL knob is turned up then goes back down to zero when it is left alone. I'm assuming this is the CTRL not sending the equivalent of a expression pedal signal to say it's in a static position, not sure why though as that's what it's intended for. Also, I guess only using the X control means that even if I can get it to work it will only work as one input control......in which case I think I'll give up on the CTRL and will just get an expression pedal at some point.

Did you try using just a TRS to TRS cable (with an 1/8” TRS adaptor) with the EHX? It sound like the C4 is only seeing one resistance value vs two (there should be a ring to ground vs tip to ring resistance blend I believe)

Thanks, I tried that with the cable that comes with the C4 and didn't have any luck. I returned the CTRL but perhaps someone with more skill and patience than me could get one to work with the C4, it did send information so seems like it could potentially work.
