I always kinda wanted to get an actual Meridian Funkulator, it's been on the G.A.S. list for a good long while. Just never pulled the trigger. Looking forward to checking out your patch!

5sg.
The basis of the Funkulator is a Boss OC-2 -1 octaver, a Foxrox Octron octave up and a simple filter. The early units didn't have much control over the filter and the quack was quite wild.

The OC-2 -1 octave was an easy dial in as that's been covered a lot already on the C4, I set that up as voice 1 and assigned that volume to Control1.

The Octave Up is essentially a Foxrox Octron circuit. An Octave +1 with an envelope and dirt. I found that the best dirt for this was the Octave Fuzz. It's pretty close, but the settings are a lot milder than a Foxrox. I dialled this as Voice 2 and assigned this Control 2. The dirt is only assigned to Voice 2. So you can dial in either very easily. I would keep the Octave up quite low (around 80 on the knob) to keep it in the Funkulator sound. It's a very funky, mellow sound. The wet dry mix that sounds most like the meridian unit when it's got a little bit of dry bass in there, say only 90% wet.
The Filter is dialled in via the Expression pedal...I ran out of other knobs. This fades in the Q of a quaky Peak, 4 pole Low pass filter. Pedal down. The Q is at zero and can't hear it. The filter is set to affect both Voice 1 and 2.
It's easy to over dial in the Voice 2, which is supposed to be quite mild and smooth / funky. But you can dial in some pretty extremes here if you like, but they aren't found in the Meridian unit.

Sounds like (new) Denver!

It's insane, @sunbeast - and we're not even looking in Denver. There's no way we could (or would even want to) afford what we're looking for in Denver proper.

Very nice, sir! Sounds like a pretty smart way to have it all set up. I think Meridian has been dark for a while now so I missed that boat, but will very much look forward to checking out your patch as soon as I can make time!

We looked Boulder to SouthEast Denver (Aurora ? Arvada ?)
about 20 yrs ago. I had an opportunity in Tech Center. It seemed like it was well on it's way to becoming LA... We're skiers and 1 person told me you move to Denver to stop skiing locally due to I-70 traffic on the weekends. Seemed like the best bet for us housing wise was up north of Boulder. Longmont, maybe Greeley but the commute to Tech Center would have been out of the question.

Passed on the job and kept looking west...

We are just finishing a remodel on our place to bring it into line with the rest of the area. We could sell, make a killing and then be homeless as even so, there is nothing we could afford to buy. The housing market is just nutz. My realtor bandmate is making a killing on every sale but housing stock is limited. I suspect we are seeing another bubble as I hear that what you are finding and what I see locally is going on all over the place. If that is the case, better to stay put and wait for the crash...

DMC micro PRO on the board. :hyper:
Easy setup. There’s a way to upload from a file of preset names, but I didn’t try to figure that out. I just used the L R buttons to scroll through the characters.

No more fumbling with my paper list in the dark. :) Well, at least not for the C4.

Just got one of these the other day. Best resource to learn what all the settings in the Neuro app does? Trying to dial in a very specific sound.
The Zach Rizer video is where I started to get an idea of what everything does (still A LOT to absorb) but a synth-head friend of mine gave me great advice for for a starting point while trying to emulate the funky vintage sounds I'm primarily looking for:
  • Start with keeping it simple with just one envelope and filter
  • Fast envelope
  • 4-pole filter
  • Mild distortion if any (I frequently go filter only)
  • Start with 2 saw waves detuned (I like taking one down and one up 5-10 of the seemingly arbitrary numbers that it uses)
Tweak settings from there and play with adding a sine or square wave for different elements.

Using that process (and occasionally diverging from it) I've gotten about 10ish presets (and counting!) that I think I'm somewhat happy with for my 70s disco/funk dance band, although it's hard to confirm until first gig back at the end of the month.

Hope that helps some. Good luck!

Yeah thanks. He did something later in the video that was on the order of what I was looking for - a poly type swell like you'd here in 90s dnb. I found his patch and have been tweaking a bit since then. It's really helping me learn this thing.

Nice! There's really no wrong way to go about it. I tried tweaking several patches I found from the community but trying to figure out some of the routing and why certain things were interacting the way they were was making my head swim. I'm sure I'll dig into more like that in the future but for now I'm having a lot of luck (and fun) building from scratch!

Ok so I've finally made it all the way through this massive (and massively helpful) thread! Thank you all for sharing your patches and tips! Because of miss Rona I haven't had a chance to use my C4 with the band in any capacity yet, but will in the coming weeks. I have a couple questions I was wondering if someone could help with.

Question 1.) I've got a similar setup to @fivestringgecko where I'm queueing my presets via the Midipad app on my iPad. Early on in the thread it seemed like in order to use the C4 with an iPad you needed to go from the iPad to the USB camera connector, into a DMC Micro.ghost, then into the C4 via the micro.ghost adapter cable. So I bought everything and doing it this way works great. I just don't really know what the micro.ghost is doing because from what I read later on in the thread, it seems like all I need is to go from the camera connector with a USB and then straight into the C4 (via the micro.ghost adapter), correct? What is the micro.ghost for? If I don't need it for this application (and I don't plan on employing and more midi pedals) should I hang on to it or release it into the wild?

Question 2.) I have an expression pedal hooked up (DOD mini) and it works, but I'd like it to be treated like a knob when it comes to presets. I want whatever parameter it is assigned to to be stored and recalled by the preset but overridden if I move it. Is this possible, and how?

Does anyone know (roughly) how I can achieve a bass sound in Don't You Know from Jacob Collier? You can hear it from second 42 onwards:

@fivestringgecko is sometimes good at this! :)

@In3d1ble - I haven't forgotten about you... I just got a chance to sit down this evening and make start digging into this sound as I wait for yet another offer on a house to be rejected! :D:roflmao: LOL

Currently two saw waves, a square wave and a sine wave. It's not quite there and needs some more tinkering, it still feels a bit squishy and less immediate than Collier's sound. But it's a good start. More to come.

DUUUDDDEEEEE!!!! That's awesome! I can definitely hear it going in the very right direction. I imagine with a lot of dry signal this might be really close. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this!

Good luck with the house offer. I have builders changing our windows and doing new floor here right now and the main guy telling me it's gonna be much more expensive than originally anticipated. Classic. Once you buy that house it's gonna be like "Ok now we need to do this and this and then that and start saving for this and that.... poopie..."

You take requests? lol. It'd be for guitar anyway.
