Ahhh, can't wait to get one of these in and deep dive! There's been a bunch of great demos showing bunches of cool sounds, but I want to see what this thing is like to create patches on! It looks so incredibly powerful. Haven't really seen a synth pedal yet with all those options. Actually feels like a full synth for once!
Many people, myself included, are frothy with anticipation over a Proton Lenny Demo of the C4/Spectrum. Not that there have not been other demos worthy of foam and glee but we must all but wonder what the Master Blaster will deliver unto us when the Thyme is Rife and the Thyde is Hye!

I recently got a Morningstar MC6 MKII and have been using it with the Future Impact to get loads of cool chordal stuff going. (4-note rootless voicing II-V-I progressions with proper smooth internal voice leading, check the FI thread for details (Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?)). I took a look at the C4 midi menu yesterday and am going to see if I can apply what I’ve been doing with the FI to the C4.

The C4 MIDI implementation will take me some time to get my head around; there are separate settings for semitone offset (+/-11 semitones) and octave (+/-3 octaves) so whereas on the FI, I can set oscillator pitch with one message, the C4 will require 2. It does mean that octave switching will be a breeze though. I’ll need to do more maths to determine the values needed. I’m not sure if the values are documented, I’ll need to check the manual.

I’m sure I’ll be able to apply what I’ve done with the MC6 and FI to the C4 but it’ll be harder than on the FI. One thing I have figured should be possible is to use MIDI to change the key centre and scale type for the intelligent harmoniser on the fly.

I also think there might be way to trigger the sequencer on one processor then switch input channels via midi to play over the top using the other processor 2. I’ll look into it.

I need to get a USB host and get cracking.

@rsmith601 could you please tell me if the Neuro editor can pass MIDI signals from the MC6 to the C4 if both are plugged in to USB ports on my computer? (The MC6 is capable of talking to DAWs, I just don’t know if Neuro is able to pass midi messages).

Isn't it simpler to assign the two settings to separate patches and then switch between them? I can patch hop on my Boss ES-5 pretty much seamlessly, low latency etc.

It's what we are all waiting for bud....no pressure....we also know that it will be epic. The problem is how do you approach a deep dive with such a crazy versatile pedal? Split it into 2 vids? One for the Filters / Octaves and one for the Synth layers?

Just saying...your Youtube work is inspirational and heavy hitting. You've had a huge impact on my purchasing decisions as well as my creative tonal pallet. You pretty much kicked the door open for me to a whole new world of sounds for both the low end and solo / noodling. I went from a small 5 pedal Nano+ board to the fully featured (yet compact) behemoth that I'm currently using...pretty much inspired by my quest to learn some of the tonal options and ideas expressed in your various videos.

My point was being able to have the sequencer still be playing on processor 1 while playing something else on processor 2 in real time. Switching patches wouldn’t achieve this as the sequencer on the first patch would stop.

EDIT - I guess your comment about patch switching was more about the key centres point. That could be done but you’d need 12 patches for the major keys, 12 for the minor plus all the diminished scale stuff. Much more elegant to have something which makes those changes via MIDI as it can be applied to a single patch (and indeed all patches).

@rsmith601 I just needed to follow my own advice of RTFM, looks like I don’t need a USB host at all and can just use the Hub. Yay for not having to spend more money.

Do you have a list/table/spreadsheet with the midi implementation values already worked out that you could share? Otherwise it’s a lot of parameters and maths to do to work out what MIDI values are needed for each parameter’s setting. If the work has already been done, it would be great if you were able to share it. Thanks.

Hmm. A DAW will see the C4 as a USB MIDI compliant device. The Neuro Desktop can see the C4. But I don't think the Neuro Desktop can be controlled by another MIDI controller.

I’ll see if I can do it by hooking the MC6 up to the Hub via MIDI DIN (while the Hub or the C4 is connected to Neuro via USB) and seeing if it will still pass messages to C4 that way. I’ll basically need to be able to test the MIDI commands I’m programming whilst being hooked up to Neuro so I can tweak and refine patch parameters.

For anyone wondering about the MIDI mappings, I’ve started having a look through and it seems pretty straightforward in that a value of 0 sets that parameter to its bottom value in the drop-down menu and each increment of 1 of CC value corresponds to the next setting up in the list.

So for Voice 1 Semitone:

CC value 0 corresponds to -11 semitones.

CC value 11 corresponds to 0 semitones (no pitch offset).

CC value 22 corresponds to +11

@rsmith601 I couldn’t get the Neuro to pass MIDI but I’ve hooked up via the Hub while C4 is plugged into Neuro desktop and can see the MIDI change settings happen on screen.

What I can not seem to get working is the PC scroll up and scroll down function which should cycle through the presets. When I send this signal, no midi light comes on on the C4 as it does with other MIDI functions. It would seem that the C4 doesn’t respond to this message (I tested it on the FI and it works so the controller is definitely spitting the message out). Could this be added please?

I might be completely wrong, but from what I understand, the C4 doesn't respond to PC messages. You can scroll through presets with CC 103 (off) and 104 (on) though. Values being the preset numbers.

I could have sworn it was supposed to be added.
CC 103 and 104 recall a specific preset corresponding to the value used and will be recalled in bypass or active respectively.

106 and 107 scroll presets.

Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having getting my C4 to do what I want?

I'm trying to create a simple octave-up effect to use with my bass so I can also play in the guitar range a la Royal Blood. (I do plan to add distortion via the C4 or my Aftershock.) When I use a single voice set to Monophonic Pitch 1 or 2, set the octave to +1, then send that voice directly to the output, I get almost no effect. With the virtual level knob on that voice cranked all the way up and the physical mix knob all the way up, I can barely hear the higher octave. As a result, there's almost no change when I switch the pedal on or off. (I should mention that I've also turned the Filtering virtual knob for that voice to maximum.) If I use the Polyphonic Pitch 1 or 2, I get the effect I'd expect, with a higher octave that I can hear pretty well. Since I will be playing single notes, I'm suspect I'd get better performance out of the monophonic pitch shift, though.

I've tried looking at community presents that use monophonic pitch and one octave up, and every time, once I turn off any other voices, I get the same behavior: the monophonic octave up is almost inaudible. Switching to polyphonic gives me an audible octave up.

I've been careful to check that I don't have the pitch-shifted voice level way down using the physical knobs if they are assigned to allow that.

Am I doing something stupidly wrong, or is it possible the monophonic pitch shifter in my C4 isn't working.

Thank you for your help.

I assume you have messed with the Sensitivity/Input Gain controls? I haven’t messed with making my own patches yet, but scrolling through the community ones I find many that I must turn these controls up to hear sound come through (even when there is no envelope effect)
