Considering one of these very seriously. My apologies if this has been asked, but can you dial in a 100% dry tone and still use the gate?

Okay, cool---thanks for the responses. I remember, vaguely, that someone complained (either here or the S.A.S.S. thread) that they felt at zero drive they were getting a less than transparent signal. But I can't remember all of the details, and whether they were on full clean blend or not, etc. So I just wanted some opinions on whether or not you could set it 100% transparently except for using the gate.

I have ordered enough lately, so I have put them at the tops of my Christmas list and keeping pointing out to my wife that the Prymaxe sale is happening right now! I decided that (a) of all the fuzz pedals I want, I don't know what I actually want, and the OFD will probably help me figure that out while being cheaper and more flexible than most of them and (b) between the Reflex Monster (is this the full, official name?) and the Future Impact, I know what I REALLY want in 2015. If the Future Impact actually happens, that would really do wonders for the long-term planning of my board. It would probably knock off the BSW and BSY600, along with with reducing my GAS for things like the SubT, WMD Geiger Counter, various bit crushers, etc.

I'm thinking of redoing my entire board and have been reading up on the OFD.

Currently I own and use: ZVex Mastotron (scooped gated sound), EQD Hoof (=Muff clone, set to a somewhat gentler sound, more midrangey), Marshall Guv'nor (drive/eq full open) and a Sansamp pBDDI - mostly for an Ampeg-type tube sound. I also stack the bddi with the other three sometimes, never stack the first three.


As far as I've read up and listened to vids and clip it seemds the OFD (+hub) can do what I'd like it to do so actually only this question remains:

Can it do the "mild modern Ampeg" kind of sound - an example would be Tool's default sound: (I know it was asked before in this thread but never found a sound clip for this sound)

In not gonna say yes or no, simply because I dot think even with a pedal that had the same effect I could get myself to sound like that!

It won't do Mastotron sounds, so I wouldn't get rid of that if you use that one a lot. Big muff no problem, not sure about your other pedals.

It's a great pedal for sure and you can get quite a few different sounds. I'd keep your current pedals and try it out.

Yes I would sell the PBDDI and use a VT-DI. The BDDI is cool but it's too mid shy IMHO...have had both the BDD and PBDDI at some point and have sold both. Had a VT but sold it because of the lack of a DI. I have a OFD and it's not perfect but I really love it. Really only an Ampeg will sound just like an Ampeg.

I just recieved a nice OFD and played a bit with it.
I'm very happy with what I heard. Lot of flavours and so many settings possibilities !
The blend set on the right is really nice with low drives.
I still didn’t understand how I can find the initial position of the knobs when I want to change à setting. I see the led blink but it doesn't seem to indicate if I am far or not from the previous position.
Did I miss something ?

From the Source Audio OFD manual:

Note: Since the Soundblox 2 OFD preset values can differ from the physical knob positions, it can be useful to determine the positions of the preset knob values. To do this, start with the pedal in bypass and set all of the knobs to the full counter-clockwise position. Next, enable the preset and slowly turn each knob up one at a time until the preset indicator LED begins to blink rapidly. When this happens, the current position of the knob matches the saved value.

Nice tone !! And I really like the T40 style. Never had the opportunity to try one but I would like.
What settings did you use on your OFD ?

I finally had the opportunity to test mine with my band and I am very pleased with the result. I used it with my P Bass strung with Chromes and played with pick and fingers.
I plugged my OFD just after my VT Bass (I tried before and found the drives not so nice when passed through the VT Bass) and used one TubeDrive Low Gain setting and one Big PI setting. The results were really pleasant in the mix. The Big PI works really well : not harsh, present, and not lost in the mix.
I find the blend on this pedal very powerful : the dry and the wet tone mix very well. It doesn't sound artificial at all. Low end seems untouched and the eq is really well set.

My only complaint would be that it's not the most easy pedal to tweak on the fly, especially the eq. But once it's well set, it's really nice :)
