From the manual:

External Loop Pre-Effect: The external loop options allow an external effect (whether a Source Audio product or a third-party product) to be connected to the Aftershock’s INPUT 2 and OUTPUT 2. When the Aftershock is bypassed, the external effect will be out of the circuit. When the Aftershock is enabled, the external effect will be put in series with the Aftershock’s distortion circuit. OUTPUT 2 should connect to the external effect’s input, and the external effect’s output should connect to INPUT 2.

In Pre-Effect mode, the guitar signal will go to the external effect first, and then the Aftershock’s distortion circuit second.

In Post-Effect mode, the guitar signal will go to the Aftershock’s distortion circuit first, and then to the external effect second.


So basically, you can put a 'something in the second I/O. You take the Output2 -> pedal -> Input2. from there, you can by patch designate whether the inserted pedal is pre-effect or post-effect.

If the pedal in the loop is bypassed you'd just get nothing before or after as you're 'true-bypassing' through the C4, so it's just a distortion/fuzz/OD. Or you can just manually set the I/O selection to mono input1-mono-output1

-If you want to use the C4 by itself, you need the AfterShock on, but can set it for the clean setting and not get any distortion/od/fuzz.

You could certainly drop the AS/C4 into a ES-5 loop and run the pair wherever you'd like with your other effects, or you could parallel the pair with another something. Or, if you're like me and most of your effects fall in the same place in your signal chain, don't put the pair in a loop at all and just trigger on/off with MIDI.

Now I don’t suppose you know whether you can do this so the C4 triggers from the clean signal and then apply the AS dirt to that sound? I seem to recall reading that somewhere but don’t remember where - and I can’t look at the manuals at the moment.

I may not be getting this...Can you clarify for me how this would be different from using the C4 in the loop set to have the C4 first (pre-effect) then the AS dirt after? I'm not sure what your distinction is from that? Are you looking to have the C4 trigger act as a side chain and then effect a split signal?

I'm fairly sure this has been asked and answered already, but can a MIDI host controller like the DMC.micro select presets on the Spectrum/C4 even while the pedal is switched off? I want to be able to select a preset before a given song while the pedal is off, and then activate the pedal as necessary. This is possible, right?

Yes. I do this all the time. Scroll o the DMC to the patch number you want, then 'activate the pedal with the DMC. On mine the left and right buttons scroll and the middle/top button activates the pedal.

Thanks y'all! That clears it up a lot. I love my Spectrum, but would use it a lot more live if I didn't have to reach down to change presets, so I'll definitely be picking up a DMC Micro (if only I could find one in orange!).

I'd hit up Disaster Area tech support on this. They're really good about responding and helping work through stuff. I'm using a DMC3 rather than a Micro, so it's running different firmware. I did have a situation at one time with the DMC3 when I powered up and it activated a few of my MIDI pedals by default and they helped me figure that out. I also had a sitch where for some reason it was starting up and my FI was defaulting to patch 32 (bypassed) and I was trying to get it to default to patch 1.

In each time I've talked with them (by email) they've responded within 24 hours or less and given full and complete information to fix things.

Sorry I wasn’t being very clear. I was meaning that the clean signal would trigger the envelope in the C4 and AS dirt would then be added in front of the envelope. This is how it works internally with the C4’s built in dirt section. It allows your playing dynamics to get the best out of the envelope while still using the enhanced harmonics of the dirt to enhance the response of the envelope.

I hope that’s more clear, it turns out I’m finding hard to put down in words.

it seems like that would be something best served by doing by messing around with this setup in reverse, inserting the AS in the loop of the C4. I admittedly haven't played around with that on the C4 but I know they included some extensive routing options for the Input 2 on that. It amounts to using the clean as a side-chain for the envelope (similar to how you would often use a compressor)...

In order to do the Neuro app daisy-chain to do multiple pedals, you have to run a TRS cable from output 2 of the 1st pedal to input 2 of the 2nd pedal. I don't see any reason you can't have another pedal between them on the audio path (output 1 to input 1). As far as I know, the pedals do not support bluetooth.

Yes. You can put other pedals on the audio path between them. You can’t put anything between them on the TRS path (out 2 to in 2).

If anyone is using the external loop of the C4, I'd be interested in hearing how.

I'd love to put a few pedals in between the voice and filter sections, but am not sure if it's possible on patches where both filter sections are utilized.
