Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

1. MC8 via MIDI out to Disaster Area micro.ghost
2. micro.ghost usb out to Source Audio C4 USB in.
3. MC8 Omniport 4 configured as 'expression' programmed in Bank A to send CC100 (0-127) Midi Channel 1 to C4.
4. C4 patch is configured with remote expression to control filter frequency on CC100.

Here's where it gets interesting.... the C4 is accepting preset changes from the MC8 through the host on CC104. So we know that works. If I am sending CC100 via a correctly configured expression pedal in the MC8 (I know that works as I have monitored the MIDI messages being sent by the Expression pedal through the MC8) why is the C4 not accepting the expression pedal message?.

I think the C4 is misbehaving by not accepting MIDI expression messages.

I would really like someone to replicate this exact setup and report back.

Thanks again Q.

I can set something similar up, just don’t have an mc8 so you’ll have to deal with soleman terminology a bit.

I wish I could help, but I use a DMC-8 instead of the Morningstar. I assume the Host in the DMC-8 is identical to that in the Ghost though, and I can verify that expression function into my DMC works with the C4. Just to verify on the DMC, you have the dipswitch for USB set to the Host function? And you have the MIDI channel switches set to 1? Also do you have the latest firmware in the DMC?

So I have the C4 attached directly to the MC8 via USB now and the expression pedal is registering on the MC8 as working (going from 0-127). The C4 patch is still not allowing the MC8 messages to adjust the frequency as I have programmed. So now I can eliminate the micro.ghost hub as an issue at least. In standalone operation with the expression pedal attached directly to the C4 it works perfectly. Something about the MC8 talking to the C4.... Some screenshots per Quatschmachers request... (The range I have set on the frequency control is perfect in standalone too)

Just had a thought - perhaps the problem is that you’ve configured the message in the “expression 4” list. Since you are using omniports 1-3 as MIDI OUT and expression only on omniport 4, then perhaps this still counts as expression 1, i.e. there is only one expression port and so perhaps it defaults to the lowest number. Try adding your message in the expression 1 list instead and see if that does anything. It’s probably a shot in the dark and it’s way past my bedtime.

C4 with disaster Area-Micro. Used for sub synth sounds in a pop band I play in and some OC-2 style octave effects.

Well I've just resigned myself to the fact that I cant use an expression pedal through a Disaster Area micro.ghost USB/Host to control Source Audio C4 expression pedal messages.

I've redesigned my live pedalboard now to allow my Bandhelper (Android App) to send preset changes thru a Morningstar MC8 (Next/Previous song in setlist) instructions via the micro.ghost hub to the C4 via CC104 (0-127). The expression pedal will be connected the C4 mini TRS jack and expression pedal settings will bet set accordingly.

I've run the setup, and it works fine.

Hopefully a firmware update on one of the offending devices will stop other customers wasting truckloads lot of time trying to resolve this issue.

Thanks to everyone's contributions and for all of your assistance. Far better than any of the the manufacturers support in my opinion.

Over and out.

You’re welcome. However I would have to say that Source Audio and Morningstar support has always been fantastic. Disaster area are usually pretty active here too (or actually that might be on The Gear Page). Bear in mind these are small companies and it is the weekend.

Sorry, it got late last night and I didn’t get a chance to try this out yet. Try to get to it today.

Can you email [email protected] ?

send in your backup file for your C4 and a description of how everything is connected?

Edit: nevermind, I think you already emailed, just send us your backup file of the C4 and we can see what we can do.

Okay wow! (and phew), update time. I reinstalled firmware on all of the devices as a safe measure, fired it all up today and now everything thing works. Why? or what was giving me so much grief, I may never know... Needless to say that everyone who reached out and assisted is truly awesome. THANK YOU.

Now, its time to get some serious preset programming sorted.

Is there any news on the UK availability of the EQ2?
I've contacted most of the large mail order stores and all of them are saying they have no idea when they will have stock.
Thomann (a German) mail order company claims to have stock at wildly inflated prices for a German spec PSU model at £288 (Eqv $353 US). Considering the US versions are retailing around $269 US...looks like a bad deal. Especially considering the wrong PSU for the UK market.

That is odd. We did ship to the UK in late May. This is the contact info for our UK distributor:

I’m from Sweden and bought from Thomann, it was eqv. $364...

But one hell of a nice EQ!

So I’ve got a sound I like on my HX stomp that I’d like to reproduce on the Aftershock. Doesn’t have to be exact: Boss distortion into Hiwatt head on medium gain + 4x12. I run lows through a crossover to keep them.

What would people recommend for engines to start with? There are so many. I was thinking stacked engines since I don’t need stereo: something high gain into power stage, with a high end roll off. But would love some suggestions. Don’t want the HX on my pedalboard.
