Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

I'm currently using a neuro hub to connect my C4 and UW to a morningstar MC6.

I would prefer to send presets to the pedals without also sending the bypass state. Would switching the hub out for one series midi adapters allow me to do this via pc messages?

that can be done with cc103/104 already. Send 103 for recall bypassed and 104 for recall active. Then the value you send for the cc number represents the preset number you want to load.

Yes. I would prefer to change the presets without changing the bypass state so that only the stomp switches on the pedals turn them on or off. I don't think it can be done with the hub.

Possibly stupid question. Does stuff downloaded from Neuro typically have expression mapped? Or is it a crapshoot? What about the factory presets? I've never used an expression pedal with my C4 but am thinking about getting one.
Depends very much on who programmed it. You can of course add your own mappings.

So if a scene is created but a single pedal parameters might have to be adjusted (to suit a room acoustics for example), I will have to plug in a USB from pedal to laptop, adjust parameters as necessary, resave preset, resave to library, re import to scene, resave scene etc

There are a few different ways to use the hub. What I do is use it as the middle man to relay CC messages from an RJM PBC6X MIDI controller to the pedals connected to the hub. Specifically, I use the CC messages that tell the pedals which preset to switch to, and whether or not to be bypassed or engaged. So multi-pedal "scenes" I use are stored at the MIDI controller level rather than the hub, and the hub is just the "plumbing" the MIDI messages flow throuh.

Then I put the Source Audio pedals in "preset mode", so when I make physical changes to them, I can hold down the foot switch, the light blinks 3 times, and the changes are written to whatever preset it was on at the time.

A typical routine for me before each gig is to switch through each multi-pedal preset on my MIDI controller, tweak the output volume on the C4 (since synth and envelopes always tend to sound louder/softer in different rooms and on different types of stages), and then hold the footswitch to save the output level under the C4 preset.

Personally I favour the tap tempo switch with my C4 as it's instantaneous switch compared to the sweep of the expression pedal. It's also more pedal board friendly. The really cool thing about having the switch is it makes every C4 preset you have potentially a 'double' preset.

For instance I have a sub octave patch I use that turns into a synthy sub octave/dual octave Up/slightly detuned Square waves sound when I push on the switch. Another example is I have a phaser sound that turns into a phaser/sub octave/crazy vibrato-like sound when I push on the footswitch.

3 parameters is enough to change up your patch into something quite different. The footswitch is a fantastic accessory for the C4.

For users with something like an MC6 Pro, both options are possible: expression pedal sending CC100 and a footswitch set to CC100 to toggle between 0 and 127.

I've had the UW for a while but I was messing around with it today and I noticed it colors the sound a bit when engaged even with everything disabled and set flat?

Vocaroo | Online voice recorder

First part is with it engaged, in the second part I turn it off. When it is engaged it sounds noticeably thinner to me. Mix 100%, bass/mid/treble at 127, every module disabled. Is there something I'm missing or is that just the nature of this pedal?

your going to have that, just because everything is disabled in the editor, doesn’t mean it’s not still processing the signal and causing a A/D/A conversion.

While what @Gibs210 says is true, you are also putting a buffer into the circuit and changing the impedance between the instrument and amp. There is no way around this using any pedal. If you want to test this aspect, then you could try setting the pedal to buffered bypass to see what that does.

Quickie please MC6 pro users:

what cable to connect SA 161 exp pedal to Morningstar MC6pro ?

I have tried 6mm trs from expression out 1 on the SA161 to 6mm omniport on MC6 - doesnt seem to recognise

Also tried 3.5mm trrs from sensor output on SA161 to 6mm omniport on MC6 - also not working

Thanks!

Standard TRS cable from the expression into one of the MC6 omniports. You need to configure the omniport as an expression port. You need to assign expression to any MC6 banks with which you wish to use it. The manuals are your friend.

Thank you for response.

I had already configured omniport.
I then discovered the expr presets at bottom of preset list menu (rhs). Not obvious, as needed to scroll to see!
So, assigned cc# 100 for expression on C4. I selected Expression cc (linear response). Is that best one to use for full sweep?
And it works !!:)
Had to reverse cc values for this C4 preset but pleased to actually get it going.

When you say "You need to assign expression to any MC6 banks with which you wish to use it." Do you mean assign within any MC6 presets? Cant see how to assign to a bank? Within Edit Banks, clicking on expr1 on rh menu, takes me to Edit Preset page.

Thanks again. I see you are a volunteer Beta tester for Morningstar. Can I continue to ask you any qq with my MC6 unit please?

Glad you got it working.

About the expression assignments within a bank: if you rock the pedal while in the MS editing screen, it should take you to the expression preset screen. These messages are only applicable to the currently-selected bank bank. Think of them as a “pool” of expression messages from which your presets within that bank can draw from. Then in your presets you can use the “select exp message” message from the “type” field. This way you can have certain expression messages be active only on particular MS presets. It’s very handy. For instance, you could have one MS preset that gives you control over the C4’s filter cutoff, another which gives you C4’s expression control (or both together, should you so desire).

If you want a particular expression message to be active across all presets in a particular MS bank, you can set this in the “bank settings” menu and have something like event “on enter bank ” to choose type “select exp message”.

You can ask questions here and I’ll answer if I have time (which I won’t always have). I would encourage you to read the MS manual as it’s pretty well written and covers these kinds of things.
