Record-Breaking Voyager Spacecraft Begin to Power Down

Speaking of Voyager, I posted the following article a bit over a year ago, but still cool to think about.

These are the stars the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft will encounter

There are 5 spacecraft beyond our solar system. 3 are still active (Voyager 1 & 2, and New Horizons). 2 are dead now (pioneer 10 and 11).

And at some point in the far future, they'll pass near a star.

Since 2014, a space telescope named 'Gaia' has been recording the position of 1 billion stars, planets, comets, asteroids, quasars, etc.. At the same time, it's been measuring the velocities of the brightest 150 million of these objects. The result is a three-dimensional map of the Milky Way and the way astronomical objects within it are moving.

By plotting where stars will be in the future, along with each craft's known velocity and trajectories, a study was made to predict when each will encounter a star. 'Encounter' being within 2 light years away from the star LOL. Some numbers rounded.

Voyager 2 (Active): 42,000 years to a star named Ross 248. Will pass 2 light years away from star.

Pioneer 10
(dead): 90,000 years to a star designated HIP 117795. Will pass 0.75 light years away from star.

Voyager 1 (active): 303,000 years to a star designated TYC 3135-52-1. Will pass 1 light year away from star.

Pioneer 11 (dead): 900,000 years to a star designated TYC 992-192-1. Will pass 0.8 light years away from star.

New Horizons (Active): Don't know yet due to possible mission changes exploring Kuiper Belt objects.

Meanwhile, in the future...
