Special Edition Build off - Build em if ya got em

Adding another entry (if that's ok) since i'm building 2 at once right now:

Special Edition Build Off - Short Scale Jazz 5 for my Daughter

I'm pretty excited about her getting into Bass, and also I'm kind of looking forward to playing it as well, having never played a short scale bass myself. It will be interesting to see the difference in feel.

To all Builders

Thanks for being a part of this buildoff. It's just amazing all the different types of builds.

I've has some communications with Paul. He's very excited that we are doing another build, and is willing to support our voting in the Newsletter once again. A lot of people see the newsletter, and this gives us great exposure to what we are doing here.

So with respect to the voting, I plan on doing this in 2 phases.

Phase 1
Voting will be held here locally in the Luthiers Corner, and will be open for 1 week.
There will be 3 separate voting threads, Builds from Scratch, Build from Parts, Finish an incomplete project.

Phase 2
The top winners out of each category will advance to the Final Voting which will then be opened to all of Talkbass and included in the
Newsletter


The only thing I am unclear of is the exact number of top winners out of each group. I'm thinking I would like to limit the number builders in the final vote, so I'm thinking maybe the top 4 or 5 out of each group,which would leave us with 12 to 15 finalists.

Caveat: If we only get 15 to 20 people to complete their build in total, I may just go back to a single vote.

I dig it. I dont see why it shouldn't be top 3 only per category go to a 2nd voting phase. Having 9 to compare for a best-in-build winner seems almost better (easier to decide as a voter anyway) than picking 3 of 20+. Each stage could offer a single vote only because the amount of choices will be smaller. Because of the variety, not just the volume, this seems to be a fair way to handle voting. There aren't prizes right? Just the recognition of peers. This way each style of build offers opportunity for recognition, and there is still a single overall winner.

(For the record I dont expect to be among the top builds regardless of how voting is handled, lest you think my opinion is somehow self-serving :D)

events like this should be like Crufts, separate categories but there also has to be a best in show vote

If we go the 3 per category route, I'm concerned that if one category has all really great entries for primary voting, some really great entries could be left out of the "Best of Show" Voting at the end. That's why I'd like to make it at least 4 out of each group. I'm really all for making it difficult for the voters though :D. After all it's the builders that are doing the hard part:bassist::bassist::bassist:

Not sure on how many votes a person will get per category. It will depend on the size of the group. If we only get 5 in a group, yes, 1 vote could work. If we get 10 in a group, I'll put it back up to 3 votes

I don't want to comment on prizes at this time. The original intent was to be peer recognition only.

Okay, I'm in! I think I'm the eleventy-eleventh entry... The peer pressure got to me and I felt compelled to build something! Actually, it was on the list for later in the year, but I've put a couple other builds on hold, so here we go.

Special Edition Build Off - I Gotta P

Hopefully I can finish in time. Good luck to everyone. :)
