The USA Rex has 3 knobs since it has the 18V USA circuit but the Rex Pro has 4 since it has the EMG BT circuit. Personally, I would rip that out and put a TonePump in there but that is just me :) Also, the Rex Pro has EMG HZ pickups that are passive and the USA Rex has EMG DC's which are active.

I was thinking about pickup up a Rex Pro just to have and swapping the pickups with EMG DC's and putting in a TonePump. With both of those changes, I bet it will be really sweet though people seem to love the Rex 5 Pro stock too so I would be curious how it sounds. Can you tell I kick this around all the time and wonder if I should get a Rex Pro? :help:

OK guys, it's your fault! I sprung for a new REX5 Holoflash Korean model (dots and 4 knobs). Pics will come up when the bass comes in. Had to buy it blind since I couldn't find any in the Cincinnati area to try first but I'm sure it will be a great add to my "excessive" (as my wife calls it) collection of basses. I should have it in about a week. I'm no newbe when it comes to bass mods or hotrodding so I've noted the comments around the pickup and preamp changes and may jump that direction if needed.

Since I'll probably rip the stock strings off as soon as I decide to keep it - what strings are a great match for the PU/preamp layout of the REX5? I like dark, deep, smooth, non-clacky, low finger noise, well balanced strings and have had great luck in the past with DR Black Beauties. Is there something that works exceptionally well on this bass? I think this is a 35" scale bass as well so I'll need to make sure whatever 5 string set I get is the right length.

Congratulations on the Rex buy! A year or so ago I came close to buying a Rex 5 holoflash but it didn't come with a case and I couldn't afford to buy a special case at same time.

What you described in what you like in strings...have you considered going with GHS Stainless Steel Flatwounds? I use GHS Precision Flats SS FW for 3+ years now and absolutely sold on them! I use them on 34"&35", 4&5 strings. They are smoother than a babies bottom, zero finger noise, easy on fingers you can play for hours and days without soreness, zero clanking, deep sounding and very long lasting. I play in two different bands and hadn't changed out strings in a year plus.

Off subject...just heard on Fox News that the Department of Justice busted thru the doors of Gibson guitars, with guns and all out! :eek: Gibson CEO talked and said that the DOJ is saying that the Rosewood that they buy from India is illegal! Wow! CEO claims it was bought legally. Millions $$$ in Gibson assets have been ceased and factory closed down.

Interesting. Hadn't really even given flats on a Spector a thought. Nearly all my basses have rounds on them now, with the exception of a set of Chrome Flats I have on a Reverend 5L. I really don't have much experience in the flats world so anything I try there would be new to me. Thought about putting some TI Jazz flats on one of my Fenders but haven't got around to it yet. I've also had lots of love in the past for LaBella Tapewounds on my Jazz basses and Stingrays, but again hadn't really even made the connection between tapes or flats and Spectors. Maybe worth a try if the roundwound path doesn't pan out. So for now it's DR Black Beauties in the lead with GHS flats and LaBella Tapes as potentials.
Any other recommendations on a good 5 string set for a finger player (no slap, no pic).

I think it's popping up again because Gibson is saying lately that no charges still have been filed from the raid that happened in August. I just did a quick search on Google and a bunch of sites are posting this story so that might be why Fox news showed it.

Not sure they actually market to the metal crowd so much. Spectors are great for any style really. The thing that makes them so popular with the metal crowd is the tone. When you need to cut through yet support 2 guitars with big tones and a loud drummer, Spector delivers. They stay articulate, have great bottom end, and really don't need anything to sound great wile doing their thing. The majority of other basses get lost in the mix where the Spector holds its ground and does its job.

What styles do you play? There are some good clips out there and on here. Agreed though , you will have to sort through lots of metal clips first. Sorry , its the best tool for that job imo, others seem to agree SS well :)

I think that metal players find them, because Spector electronics have boasted a thundering growl like no other bass for a long time.
I have had my NS4CR for 16 years, and I have yet to play another bass that comes close to the aggressive sound I get from mine. They are TIGHT!

Yeah. This is definitely old news. Two raids last fall (Both Lacey Act - one rooted in Madagascar and one in India) and no charges to date. Gibson's making noise that this isn't all about sustainable and responsible forestry, but is instead is a blank check for abuse by the government. Despite it being more than six months since the last raid, Gibson has not been given their day in court, and all of the impounded items remain locked up in Federal custody until their disposition is decided in the case.

I used to buy lumber globally, and the Lacey Act was written in the right spirit. Where it gets sticky is the level of documentation required to denote the wood's handling between falling the tree and crossing the borders. Duties and fees are charged not just on the lumber itself, but can be charged on all the labor value that was incurred to get the lumber into the condition it was in when crossing the border. The Madagascar raid was mostly about the wood. The India raid was about the wood being classed in the wrong classification to avoid the additional costs for labor.

If you ever care to get into that much detail about wood, it's interesting reading.
