BTW...congrats on your buy! I really don't think it's anything to worry about. If nothing else just carefully inject some quality wood glue or bond into the separation.

Put some EBMM COBALTS ON IT!!!! Holy cow, I've never been this blown away by strings. And this is just not the same "oh they're just new so they sound better" feeling. These things are LOUD, growly, mid forward and crystal clear. Unbelievable I tell ya.

Oh Great! I was just ready to pull the trigger on a set of DR Black Beauties for my Spector REX5 and now you have me thinking in a different direction. Here's the 5 string set, is it the same type you're talking (looks like a lot of different options in the 4 string sets) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
I'm really loving the agressive nature of this Spector if the Cobalts make it more so it might be even more interesting, then again too much of a good thing my not be good. The DR Black Beauties would take the REX in the oppostite direction I suspect, more bass/deeper/mellow/less agressive, which is the direction most of my other basses have gone.
Think I already know the answer to this, but wanted to run it by you guys anyway.
I got my Euro 435 from Bass Central and I had requested they set it up BEAD. It did come with a BEAD set on the (the Spector brand I believe), but action is playing fairly high for my taste, to the point where if I have a note fretted on the E, my finger will run into the side of the B string when I go to fret on the B. The tension is not bad and it doesn't feel hard to fret. Also I fretted the 1st and last and used my .015 feeler gauge at the 7th, 8th and 9th frets and I don't feel the neck has too much relief. There might have been a hair more space than the gauge but if I pressed down on the string when the gauge was in, there was hardly any give at all.
I think the nut has to be the culprit. It seems unusually shallow. I have a Euro 5 and Euro 6 and neither have a nut cut this shallow. Even if I hadn't asked for BEAD I think this would have been too high. Take a look (pardon the mess):
It likely needs a date with my setup guy, but he has expressed reservations using his nut files on brass for fear of ruining them. I'm happy to get my own and bring them (I'm not going to try filing myself), so if anyone has a recommendation for what nut file to use I'd appreciate it.
I thought about lowering the saddles to compensate but I really don't think that's the right way to go. Feedback please!

So would that nut be normal for EADG? Seems pretty high for that too. Perhaps this came file improperly from the factory?

Exactly what Jarrod said. That B string isn't even sitting in the nut so it looks like they took a a Standard Euro 435 and slapped thicker strings on it but didn't file down the nut to accommodate the thicker strings.
When you bought it from them, did it say it was tuned to BEAD? That is an additional cost so it would definitely be mentioned and I can guarantee Spector wouldn't let a bass out of their shop looking like that. Without filing that nut down, you wil never get proper action since the string is sitting so high up like that.
I know it didn't come from Spector BEAD, but I requested Bass Central set it up that way before they shipped it to me. They charged me $35 extra which I thought was a good price for the setup, but it seems all I paid for was the strings. I assumed they would file it. It's not unplayable but it's not consistent with the feel I'm used on my other basses. Oh well - lesson learned.
I guess I'm just surprised those nut slots would be deep enough for an EADG set. The slots look shallower than the EADG slots on my Euro 5 and Euro 6.
From what you are saying and from the photos it does appear the nut is too high.
Do you also find it harder then usual to press down the string on the 1st and 2nd fret?
Looking at the photos it almost looks like they used a EADG nut and also didnt shave the bottom down enough.
Both of my Euro LX nuts are about [DEL]4.5mm-5mm [/DEL]high. 7mm, high bottom to top
How high is the nut on your bass?

I just installed a replacement Spector Brass nut on my Blk Euro LX and I had to really shave alot off the bottom of the nut as it was way too high. I would guess that I took off atleast 2mm.
Instead of filing the slots you can also use dremel to shave down the bottom of the nut or you can just rub the bottom of the nut on sand paper to shave it down.(which takes a while).
But do they come in Neon Green?
Still enjoying the heck out of my DR Green Neons, I have my first performance type thing at a school talent show on the 23/24, so they should get some attention on stage. I've been tweaking the set-up on the Rex as well to try and get it easily tap-able with as little fret buzz as possible. It's the first time I've ever done my own set-up, but so far it's gone pretty well and I think I can just lower the bridge saddles a little and it'll be perfect.
i guess ill give these a shot on my next string change. i sure love my rotosounds though. comparison, perhaps?
I would say the first two frets are a little harder.
Given how fast they shipped it out I don't think they put a new nut on there.
I am not a DIY guy when it comes to nut filing and I don't want to make this bass my guinea pig so I'll have to take it in.
When you say "how high" on the nut, where is that measurement taken? From the base of the nut to the top of the nut or from the fretboard to the top of the nut? From the base of the nut where it meets the neck to the top of it I'd say it's close to 7mm so that might be consistent with you removing 2mm of yours to get get it to 4.5 or 5.
So big question: to go BEAD on this do I pretty much have to get the nut removed and have it shaved down from the bottom in addition to the slot work? I was hoping this is something I could get done while I wait since I drive 45 min. to get to the guy, but now it's sounding like this might require me to leave it. Ugh - I hate doing that.

Going to check out a euro lx 435- tw this week... If I like it then I will be getting one in may sometime.... That also mean my ns2a might go on the market....
