Not really that hard.
All Czech (NSCR's) and US 5 (and 6 strings) pre 1999 are 34" scale. The Czech's come up for sale quite often. Pretty much any NS5CR with the SSD logo will be 34" scale. A few of the transition 34" scales with inlays and double S logo also can be found occasionally.

And to me the best sounding 5-string from the before 35" XL days are the USA-Made Kramer-Era NS-5 models. They were 34" scale 5-strings with dual J pickups and the USA 9v Tone Circuit (Haz).
Doug Wimbish still plays one to this day. Graham Maby still has his I believe... he's sold some of his older Euro models lately.
That is a killer Spector to get your hands on if you can find one.

Not when I had the cash available to drop. It was a ghost town for about 5 weeks. Oh well - I'll be filing to get my refund soon, so I'm sure the market will dry up once again...

Hung out with ubnomar today. Took my Forte over to his house. Man, he has the SAS and the GAS!

Basically just talked Spector for a couple hours and a little catching up - saw him last year? Can't remember when exactly. Anyway, good times, good dude!

The P-J pickups compared to humbuckers I'm used to are a bit less in the mids, but more "open" like there's more tonal range to them, which is good overall, but being a more mids guy I'm running the tonepump with the EQ knobs all the way off to get a little mid bump. (I recall hearing that the tonepump has a slight cut, and a lot of boost, rather than the center of the knob's rotation being flat) It is a non-trim tonepump, so it is older than whenever those came out (S/N is ND166x if that means anything to anyone)

I don't feel bad for getting it from the guy for such a low price (just under 800) anymore, as it has a number of nicks/dings along the bottom and back, and a few scratches in addition to the 2 dings between the pickups on top. Not something I personally care about all that much, I just play it for the sound, but I think being beat up a bit makes me feel better that I got it for a low price. Also it has Schaller straplock buttons, but it is missing the actual straplock parts that attach the strap to the buttons.

I have a couple of the straplock parts leftover from another set, but one is missing the nut to attach the strap, so I'm gonna have to see if I can make something to get it to work (also they are chrome vs. the gold spector hardware).

But overall it sounds good, I might switch the EMGs for old-school cream Dimarzios if I can ever find the P pickup, as the EMGs are a bit clean for me, but we will see. Pics to come when the weather isn't awful out.

Roll the blend knob forward a little, and you'll find those mids will jump out a bit, then boost the bass n treb a bit (50-70%) . There's a few really nice sweet spots in there. Just gotta take a little time with her. Congrats!

Yep...a bit different than the soapbars, that is for sure....I prefer the P/J pickups myself....

Hey Guys,
The new Performer just got a really nice review in the latest Bass Guitar magazine( British). They also have a great review of a Zebop in their archives. It's a great mag if you have a chance check it out. they have lots of gear reviews. A bit expensive here in the States though. Take Care,

No blend knob, it's volume-volume, I have to install a blend knob myself. Still unsure when this one was made since it is non-trim tonepump.

Anyone converted an EMG equipped bass from volume to blend? Anything I need to worry about that is different from doing it with passive pickups? I know they need power or soemthing

Also, aren't EMG pickups supposed to be noiseless? Anytime I get near anything electronic, the J pickup makes annoying noises like it's picking up hum.

Hey guys, I've been playing Warwicks for years and after reading all of your Spector loving posts, I just recently purchased a brand new Spector Rebop 5DLX-EX. What an incredible instrument! The tone I get out of this bass on my Fender Bronco 40 combo practice amp is unlike anything I've heard before. As a guy who plays mostly metal, I'm very happy I made this purchase.

So far the 35" scale hasn't been much of a bother, but the string tension is much greater than I'm used to. I love the B string, but the others are pretty tight. I have a new set of DR High Beams, would those have a looser feel than the stock Spector strings?

Hi Beams will definitely give you some lower tension. If it was brand new, it most likely has Spector nickel strings which definitely have more tension but you will be happy with the Hi Beams.

Just a heads up. The DR strings are not tapered like the Spector ones so at first, you might have an issue getting the B string into the bridge. Just use a pair of needle nose pliers and crimp the end rights where the ball of the string is by the bridge and you will be able to get it in there.

I have an old Performer DLX 5 that has a 34" scale, great bass. I think its similar to the new ones except it has a 1-piece neck instead of a 5-piece, it has a laminate flame maple top, and its made it China. I really like it, and I'm sure the new Performers are even better!
