I was just thinking the same thing! Rather than hot-rodding my 2 euros, I'm pondering selling one or both of them (along with a Ric or two & my EBMM Stingray) and grabbing a 2nd USA NS4 - namely the redwood-topped beauty currently residing at Bass Central...

Think about it...you always want a couple of sacrificial lambs to certain clubs that are "hazardous"...just a thought.

man that redwood is beautiful. i think the cocobolo is f'n killer too though! i think that's the only spector ive seen with cocobolo. totally bad! the only other bass ive seen with it is a ken smith. and that was years ago.

My used plum CRFM came to me with several dings & scratches, so it would fill the "Redneck Bar Bass" bill. Also, there's a lot of sentimental value attatched to Whitey, so I probably won't sell it either. Hmm, that haz pre is sounding better & better (and far more affordable) all the time...

For those in the know, I'm thinking about installing a Haz pre in my white Euro LX4. How close will this get me to the tone of a USA NS2? Would the Haz sound better (i.e. more like an NS2) in my plum CRFM4 with its solid maple wings?

I've thought about doing the same thing with my CRFM4 but I already have the TonePump and ran at 18v it is soo close to the HAZ

Agreed - the EMG pre sounds much better than the TonePump, imho. If I put the Haz in in the plum, then the EMG pre would definitely go in Whitey.

When I get my rex4 (all maple with BT circuit) I am going to do some testing and sound comps between the BT and TP in that bass with active PJ pups. I need to get my recording stuff back up so I can document it.

I changed the tone-pump in my Ian Hill to a haz...not much different,....but most euro's have different sound...its weird but maybe Sam can explain it.

Honestly I've never understood the "have a beater for the redneck bars" thing... I will play the bass that gives me the sound I want if its a $5k or $600 bass I don't care. I buy these things to play!!

I have heard of a few people installing a Haz into newer Euro's and they don't really hear that much of a difference. I would recommend you install one in the CRFM4 though for 2 reasons. One, like you said, it has the solid maple wings which the newer Euro's don't have. And the second is the solid Brass bridge which the USA models have but Euro's do not so that will get you closer to an NS-2 I would think than the white Euro.

Keep the tonepump in the Euro and mod it to 18v and you will have 2 serious tone monsters right there. But hey, this is all my opinion

6 string beauty alert! There is a Euro six in natural curly maple on the Richmond VA craigslist. Can't link it on my mobile but its easy to find. $1100 with hardshell ! Not mine.....can't hang with the six but I am sure someone can. She is beautiful!

Took a quick family photo today while taking a break from yardwork. My 2 NS4CRFMs bookending my NS2AJ-R that arrived yesterday. Jury is out on the color of the one on the left though. I'm not sure if it's black cherry or plum.

This morning I decided to try something I've never attempted before...
I drop tuned my B string to A! At rehearsal this morning for my church band gig I couldn't believe how amazing these Power Slinkies sounded! With the B string being a .135 I couldn't tell not a difference in the slackness. Wow...this Forte 5 sounds absolutely Magnificant hitting that low A! Loving these strings!

Getting ready for my first show in a while with the legend. I'm playing a pixies cover and an original with one group, a puscifer cover with another (country boner), and jamming on a standard or 2 with a jazz guitarist friend. Gonna be quite the diverse show! Should be a good showcase for the legend's versatility.

Poke grendle for video, guys. Went to hear them play last night, shot video, loading it for him to look through and decide what he wants done with it. He was sounding AWESOME!!

Nothing wrong with getting an amp first. I think there are quite a few bassists out there who buy a bunch of nice basses, & then end up dissatisified because their amp is not up to snuff. Every bass you own will only sound as good as the amp that it is played through, so save those pennies & choose wisely - your Spector will thank you!

So, I put my Euro5 on eBay last week, just to see if it would sell (it wasn't moving on here); a dude e-mailed me for more pics a few days ago, and he came in at the last minute and bought it. $1100 + shipping w/Gator hardshell case. I'm happy, he's happy...the ironic thing is that I decided that I would keep it if it didn't sell, switch out the OBP-1 for a Tonepump (w/trim pot, of course), and have two 5ers.
Oh, well; if I ever want another 5er besides the Alex Webster, I'll get a dark blue translucent paint job with the electronics I want right from the factory!

Great videos! Finally someone getting closeups of the bass player(Grendel) since that is pretty much all we want to see anyways You watch any other live videos and all they show are the singer and guitar player.

the haz will sound amazingly good in your white euro. yours and mine will be twins then. I don't think you need to replace the bts in the plum, IMHO. that's a great underrated pre in the early Czech basses.

or, get your redwood bass, then we'll talk about your Blue one. no one needs two.

I stayed up to 5am playing and I just got up and I almost missed my favorite subject. Haz vs. Tonepump

Here is my 2 cents.

Before I owned a Spector with a 9v Haz I kept thinking it cant be that good. When I installed it into my Forte I nearly exploded with excitement.

So the 9v Haz in my favorite Preamp ever.

With that being said. A "Trim" Tonepump running at 18V's is very close.

I am considering putting a Haz in my Euro 4LX just to hear the difference with that wood vs the solid maple wings on my Forte and NS-2. (but its a lot of $ to lay out for a comparison)

Right now after I play my Forte, NS-2 and Euro 4LX back to back to back. I am still liking the tone with the Euro 4LX with the Trim Tonepump at 18V.

On my Euro 4LX, I have the trim set to 30% is a bit more "airy sounding"
The treble boost is at a higher freq range on the Tonepump so the treble boost will give you a higher end brighter boost then the Haz treble boost.

My opinion.

If you decide to buy a Haz put it in one of the NS4CRs and put a Trim Tonepump in your Euro 4LX

All this and I forgot to ask what type of music do you usually play?

Nice Great vids and I agree, nice to see some close ups of the the bassist. Leave it to a bassist to record the video and that is what you get.

It's be pretty close. I prefer the Haz tone vs. TP also. But lately I'm digging the OBP-3! My fav so far!

I had an ibanez Acoustic/electric bass with Cocobolo but thanks to BAD packing from MF it didn't survive the journey. :scowl: I'll dig up a pic of it. It was gorgeous!
