SPECTOR® Club - Part 41

Here's one of the songs from my band I.R.U.M.C. BAND, that we recently recorded. I know this genre (CCM) of music isn't everyones liking but I hope you will listen to it and enjoy it. :)

I'm thinking about keeping them on my NS 2 just for a slight tone change. Question: Slinkies get ripped a lot in the "string" section for not lasting very long. I take a lot of that with a grain of salt but curious to hear others opinion. Jaymi says he gets about 6 months out of them, which is incredible. Any other thoughts on long lasting nickels...especially Slinkies?

You didn't like the Dunlop Steels, but I say try the Dunlop Nickels. ;) :D

Sounds good! Track says: "Jesus Messiah" but it plays Mighty to Save. I really enjoy playing both of those songs.

String life is relative. I usually change the strings when I first get a bass, and rarely change them for years after, unless I really gig the crap out of it, then maybe once a year.

I haven't experienced any difference between Slinkies or say D'Addarios in life or real tone at all, but that is me and my playing style. DR's still have more mojo in my hands, but I do have all my "clankety-tappity-bangety" basses strung with Slinkys for more attack.

Jaymi plays the living crap out of his basses, so if he is getting 6 months out of any string, let alone EB's, then the strings are good to go for the rest of us much longer.

My two pennies....

Well it's confirmed, I like the preamp in my REX5 MUCH better than the preamp in my Euro 4LX. The REX has a BT preamp with the EMG HZ pickups and the Euro has the standard EMG P/J pickups but the old non-trim pot tonepump. The Euro doesn't seem to have the range of the Rex and it appears more mid focused.
I assume the newer tonepump with the trim pot will maintain the general character of the old tonepump but will allow some gain adjustment. If that assumption is fairly correct I'll skip on a new tonepump upgrade and move on to the 9volt USA upgrade.
Assuming cost is not an issue is this a good move or should I focus on the pickups first?
By the way, I love the bass (pic below) and fully intend to keep it, the neck, action, weight, looks and everything else about this bass is perfect. So just planning on tweaking the tone a bit.
Also, for what it's worth - I did replace the strings with Cobalts and raised the pickups to about 1/32 of an inch from the strings. It made a huge difference in punch and decay, both for the better. Worth a try if you haven't done so yet. I didn't notice any distortion increase from the magnet pull either.

I haven't tried Slinky's on any of my Spectors so maybe I would like them. I've just really liked the Fat Beams right now on my 5-string Spectors - moreso than nickel Lo-Riders or Dunlop nickels.

Don't touch the pickups! With a US 9v circuit you're going to be very close to a US NS-2 :bassist:

The non-trim Tonepump I am sure is limiting the full dynamic range coming from that bass. If you go with a Trim Tonepump I am sure you will be happier with he overall tone.

When you adjust the trim down, there is less "Tonepump" going into the signal and overall you get better control of it.

But if you do like the BT in the Rex for being more Mid Focused I suggest doing a BQC in the EuroLX if you want to keep the cost down on the upgrade.

But if you can swing the cost of the 9V USA Circuit. That is the "King" of a Mid Range focused preamp

$89 and does everything I need it to via USB and I find it to have 0 latency issues (though that may have more to do with the quality of my MacBook Pro than the hardware) and very durable and easy to use. For the price, it's fantastic.

Thanks for all the bumps guys, It helped me get rid of the NS-2JA-R rather quickly. I'm meeting the guy in Augusta (but certainly not in Rock Bottom music for fear of a lynching) on Saturday to hand it over. That and gift function payment just saved me a lot in shipping so more to go to the medical debt. Happy stuff.

But thank you for the bumps and keeping the thing up there on the first page for me. It did help a lot!

Guess I got the answer I was hoping to get. Hands off the pickups, flip out the old tonepump and drop in a Spector 9 volt preamp. Cool, sounds like an easy project, minor pot shaft hole increase and some basic soldering I assume. I suspect someone here has done this before on a Euro any words of wisdom or pre and post sound clips would be welcome.
